Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

audityxe-cli

Live on npm: npmjs.com/package/audityxe-cli — npx audityxe-cli <url> works right now, no setup.

The exact same audit engine that powers audityxe.vercel.app — SEO, accessibility, security headers, performance, DNS/TLS/email-auth, legal pages, and more — running entirely on your own machine or CI runner. Free, unlimited, and offline except for the requests made to whatever URL you're auditing.

npx audityxe-cli https://example.com

Why a CLI, separate from the website

The hosted app has a daily free-tier limit and needs an account for anything beyond that, because it pays for its own compute and storage. This CLI has neither of those costs, so it has neither of those limits — it's the same deterministic checks (SEO, accessibility, security headers, DNS/TLS, legal pages, broken links, and more), copied out of the same source, running on hardware you already have. Nothing is sent to Audityxe's servers; the only network calls this makes are to the site you're auditing, and — only if you opt in with --psi-key — to Google's PageSpeed Insights API using your own free key.

Install

No install needed for one-off use:

npx audityxe-cli https://example.com

Or install it globally / as a dev dependency:

npm install --global audityxe-cli
audityxe https://example.com
npm install --save-dev audityxe-cli
npx audityxe https://example.com

Usage

audityxe <url> [options]
audityxe history [url]

--deep Real multi-hop crawl (up to 25 pages, 3 hops) instead
of the default fast crawl (homepage sample only).
--compare <url> Also audit a second URL and print a head-to-head
                          comparison, category by category.
--psi-key <key> Your own free Google PageSpeed Insights API key — adds
a real-browser Lighthouse pass, and enables the
real-user Core Web Vitals (CrUX) module.
  --min-score <n> Exit non-zero if the overall score is below <n> (0-100).
This is what makes it usable as a CI gate.
--track Save this run's score locally (~/.audityxe/history.json)
so `audityxe history <url>` can show the trend.
--json Print the full result as JSON.
  --no-color Disable ANSI colors.

Head-to-head comparison

audityxe https://yoursite.com --compare https://competitor.com

Runs the exact same audit against both URLs and prints a category-by-category comparison. Note: comparing two sites is genuinely closer to two full audits' worth of work than one — if the competitor URL is slow or unreachable, the comparison is silently omitted (the primary audit still completes and prints normally) rather than failing the whole run.

Score history / trend tracking

audityxe https://yoursite.com --track # save this run's score locally
audityxe history # list every URL you've tracked
audityxe history https://yoursite.com # full trend for one URL, oldest to newest

Purely local — a JSON file at ~/.audityxe/history.json on your own machine, nothing sent anywhere. Useful for watching a score trend over time without needing an account or the hosted app's dashboard at all. audityxe history <url> matches by hostname, so audityxe history yoursite.com and audityxe history https://yoursite.com/ both find the same entries.

CI gate example

npx audityxe-cli https://staging.example.com --min-score 75

The command exits with status code 1 if the score is below the threshold, so it fails the build step on its own — no extra scripting needed. See the GitHub Action if you're on GitHub Actions specifically; it wraps exactly this (including the --compare flag, via its compare-url input). For a git pre-commit/pre-push hook or any other CI, see examples/pre-commit-audit-gate.sh for a copy-pasteable starting point.

Get a free PageSpeed Insights key (optional)

  1. https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/credentials → Create credentials → API key
  2. Enable the PageSpeed Insights API for that project
  3. audityxe https://example.com --psi-key YOUR_KEY

Google's free tier covers this comfortably for CI/personal use; see their published quotas if you're running it at high volume.

What's NOT in the CLI

The AI-generated promo copy/banner feature (X/LinkedIn post drafts, shareable banner image) needs a BYOK AI key and is a website-only feature in this version — out of scope for a CI/local audit tool. Everything else — every scored module — is the same engine, same logic, same numbers you'd get from the hosted site for the same URL and crawl mode.
