Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

aws-assume

Generate temporary credentials for AWS IAM assumed roles.

Very usefull when working with tools like Serverless and Apex for deploying your Lambda code.

The temporary credentials are sent to stdout and can be evaled to use them as environment variables in Bash commands.

Usage

$ aws-assume <profile>

Installation

As part of your Node project

npm install aws-assume --save

Usage as a standalone CLI script

# package.json
...
    "scripts": {
        "deploy": "eval \"`aws-assume` apex deploy\""
    }
...

Usage as a module

import {assumeRole, getProfile, awsConfig} from 'aws-assume'
import AWS from 'aws-sdk'

...
// aws-assume exposes the AWS SDK global configuration object
// so you can customize details such as proxies, loggers and retry options
awsConfig.update({
    httpOptions: {
        agent: myProxy
    }
});

assumeRole(getProfile())
.then(credentials => {
    AWS.config.credentials = credentials
    // ...
})

Install globally

npm install -g aws-assume
eval "`aws-assume <profile>` npm run deploy"

The AWS profile is selected by the first criteria of these that matches:

  1. passing a string after the aws-assume command
  2. AWS_PROFILE environment variable
  3. default as the default

If you choose to use AWS_PROFILE make sure that you are passing the environment variable to the (sub)shell that calls aws-assume.

For example:

export AWS_PROFILE && eval \"aws-assume apex deploy\"

Requirements

You must have an AWS profile setup in your ~/.aws/credentials file similar to the following:

[default]
aws_access_key_id = ABCDEFG
aws_secret_access_key = abcdefg

You should also have a role based configuration in your ~/.aws/config file:

[profile default]
output = json
region = us-east-1
role_arn = arn:aws:iam::1234567890:role/DesiredRoleName
source_profile = default

Credits

This project is heavely based on aws-auth-helper but without the MFA part and some small variations.
