Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

AWS IP Ranges Constructs

A simple construct to filter the published IP ranges within an AWS CDK stack.

Installation

  1. Install the construct and plugin
npm i aws-ip-ranges-construct aws-ip-ranges-plugin
  1. Register the plugin in cdk.json
{
  "app": "npx ts-node --prefer-ts-exts bin/app.ts",
  "plugin": ["aws-ip-ranges-plugin"]
}

Usage

Example

Security Group Rule

Add a security group rule to enable EC2 instance connect in the current region. Refer to REFERENCE.md to view some possible values.

import { AwsIpRanges } from 'aws-ip-ranges-construct'
// Create in your stack or construct
const ec2ConnectRanges = new AwsIpRanges(this, 'EC2ConnectIpRanges', {
  regions: [Stack.of(this).region],
  services: ['EC2_INSTANCE_CONNECT'],
})

// Use in a security group rule
ec2ConnectRanges.ipv4.forEach(({ prefix }) => {
  securityGroup.addIngressRule(ec2.Peer.ipv4(prefix), ec2.Port.tcp(22))
})

L2 AwsServicePrefixList Construct

import { Resource } from 'aws-cdk-lib'
import { CfnPrefixList } from 'aws-cdk-lib/aws-ec2'
import { Construct } from 'constructs'
import { AwsIpRanges } from 'aws-ip-ranges-construct'

export interface AwsServicePrefixListProps {
  prefixListName: string
  addressFamily: 'IPv4' | 'IPv6'
  service: string
  regions?: string[]
}

export class AwsServicePrefixList extends Resource {
  public readonly prefixList: CfnPrefixList

  public readonly prefixListId: string

  constructor(scope: Construct, id: string, props: AwsServicePrefixListProps) {
    super(scope, id)

    const ranges = new AwsIpRanges(scope, 'AwsServiceRange', {
      regions: props.regions || [],
      services: [props.service],
    })

    const list = props.addressFamily === 'IPv6' ? ranges.ipv6 : ranges.ipv4

    this.prefixList = new CfnPrefixList(this, 'Resource', {
      prefixListName: props.prefixListName,
      addressFamily: props.addressFamily,
      maxEntries: list.length,
      entries: list.map(({ prefix: cidr }) => ({
        cidr,
      })),
    })

    this.node.defaultChild = this.prefixList
  }
}

Handling Deterministic Builds

Like first-party context providers, lookups are cached in cdk.context.json of your CDK project. If you need reproducible builds, you should commit this file to source control.
