Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Next.js API Routes

// pages/api/proxy/[...path].ts
import { createInterceptor } from 'axios-interceptor-plus';
import { NextApiRequest, NextApiResponse } from 'next';

const apiClient = createInterceptor({
  baseURL: process.env.API_BASE_URL,
  authConfig: {
    enabled: true,
    tokenKey: 'access_token',
    getToken: () => {
      // Get token from request headers or cookies
      return req.headers.authorization?.replace('Bearer ', '');
    },
  },
});

export default async function handler(req: NextApiRequest, res: NextApiResponse) {
  const { path } = req.query;
  const apiPath = Array.isArray(path) ? path.join('/') : path;

  try {
    const response = await apiClient.getAxiosInstance().get(`/${apiPath}`, {
      params: req.query,
      headers: {
        ...req.headers,
        authorization: req.headers.authorization,
      },
    });

    res.status(response.status).json(response.data);
  } catch (error: any) {
    res.status(error.response?.status || 500).json({
      error: error.response?.data || error.message,
    });
  }
}

🔄 Intelligent Retry Mechanism

  • Exponential Backoff: Smart retry delays with jitter
  • Custom Retry Conditions: Define when to retry requests
  • Configurable Attempts: Set maximum retry attempts
  • Network Error Handling: Automatic retry for network issues
const interceptor = createInterceptor({
  retryConfig: {
    enabled: true,
    maxRetries: 3,
    retryDelay: 1000,
    retryCondition: (error) => {
      // Retry on server errors (5xx) and network errors
      return error.response?.status >= 500 || !error.response;
    },
    retryDelayFunction: (retryCount) => {
      // Exponential backoff with jitter
      const baseDelay = 1000;
      const exponentialDelay = baseDelay * Math.pow(2, retryCount);
      const jitter = Math.random() * 0.1 * exponentialDelay;

    },
  },
});

🚨 Comprehensive Error Handling

  • Error Transformation: Custom error message formatting

    onNetworkError: (error) => {
      showNotification('Network error. Please check your connection.');
    },
    onServerError: (error) => {
      showNotification('Server error. Please try again later.');
    },
    transformError: (error) => {
      return {
        message: error.response?.data?.message || error.message,
        status: error.response?.status,
        code: error.code,
        timestamp: new Date().toISOString(),
      };
    },
    showErrorNotifications: true,
    errorNotificationHandler: (message, error) => {
      toast.error(message);
    },

// Create services with custom configurations
const authService = interceptor.addService({
  name: 'auth',
  baseURL: '/auth',
  timeout: 5000,
  headers: {
    'X-Service': 'auth',
  },
  interceptors: {
    request: (config) => {
      config.headers['X-Request-ID'] = generateRequestId();
      return config;
    },
    response: (response) => {
      console.log('Auth service response:', response.status);
      return response;
    },
    error: (error) => {
      if (error.response?.status === 401) {
        throw new Error('Authentication required');
      }
      throw error;
    },
  },
});

// Service management
const services = interceptor.listServices(); // ['auth', 'users', 'products']
const authService = interceptor.getService('auth');
interceptor.removeService('auth');

Why Choose Axios Interceptor Plus?

Perfect for:

  • Enterprise Applications: Comprehensive authentication and error handling
  • Microservices: Unlimited service creation and management
  • TypeScript Projects: Full type safety and IntelliSense support
  • Production Apps: Built-in retry, logging, and monitoring
  • API-Heavy Applications: Service factory pattern for organization

Not ideal for:

  • Simple Projects: Might be overkill for basic API calls
  • Real-time Apps: No built-in WebSocket or real-time features
  • Caching-Heavy Apps: Caching is still in beta
  • Small Bundles: Larger than basic axios (but more features)

💬 Testimonials

"Axios Interceptor Plus has revolutionized how we handle API calls in our enterprise application. The service factory pattern and built-in authentication make our code so much cleaner and more maintainable."

Sarah Chen, Senior Frontend Developer at TechCorp

"The TypeScript support is incredible. We caught so many bugs at compile time that would have been runtime errors. The retry logic and error handling have made our app much more resilient."

Mike Rodriguez, Lead Developer at StartupXYZ

"Finally, an axios wrapper that doesn't try to do everything. It focuses on what matters most - making API calls reliable, maintainable, and type-safe. Perfect for production applications."

Alex Kim, Full Stack Developer
