Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

babel-preset-canopy

v1.0.0

Some defaults for babel preset at canopy

Readme

babel-preset-canopy

A shared Babel preset for Canopy projects that provides consistent transpilation for TypeScript, React, and modern JavaScript.

Features

  • TypeScript Support - Transpiles TypeScript with @babel/preset-typescript
  • Modern React - Configured for React 17+ automatic JSX runtime
  • ES Module Preservation - Maintains ES modules for optimal tree-shaking
  • Runtime Helpers - Uses @babel/plugin-transform-runtime to reduce bundle size
  • Targeted Transpilation - Only applies necessary transforms based on browserslist targets
  • Webpack Import Ignoring - Handles Canopy-specific import patterns

Babel Version

Babel core v7 comes bundled, so ensure your project uses Babel 7.x plugins and presets.

Installation

yarn add -D babel-preset-canopy

Usage

Create a babel.config.js in your project:

module.exports = {
  presets: ['babel-preset-canopy']
};

What's Included

Presets

  1. @babel/preset-typescript - TypeScript transpilation
  2. @babel/preset-react - React JSX transformation
    • Uses automatic JSX runtime (no need to import React)
    • Development mode enabled when NODE_ENV=development
  3. @babel/preset-env - Smart JavaScript transpilation
    • bugfixes: true - Applies minimal transforms for known issues
    • modules: false - Preserves ES modules for bundler optimization
    • shippedProposals: false - Only stable language features

Plugins

  1. @babel/plugin-transform-runtime - Runtime helper optimization
    • Reduces code duplication by reusing Babel helpers
    • Enables regenerator for async/await support
    • Uses ES modules for better tree-shaking
    • Requires @babel/runtime to be available (provided via import map in Canopy)
  2. babel-plugin-webpack-import-ignore - Canopy-specific import handling
    • Ignores imports matching @canopytax/ pattern during webpack processing

Browser Support

Browser targets are defined by browserslist-config-canopy. The preset automatically applies only the necessary transforms based on your targets.

Development vs Production

The preset automatically detects the environment:

  • Development (NODE_ENV=development): Enables React development mode for better error messages
  • Production (NODE_ENV=production): Optimizes for smaller bundle size and performance

TypeScript Configuration

This preset handles TypeScript transpilation through Babel, but you should still maintain a tsconfig.json for type checking which should be run separately:

yarn tsc --noEmit
