Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Automatic Notion backup — nightly sync of your workspace to diffable Markdown + raw JSON, self-hosted, free

Readme

BackupRoost

Automatic Notion backup to GitHub or an Obsidian vault. Free, open-source, self-hosted — your data never touches a third party.

Notion has no official scheduled backup, version history is capped by plan tier, and trash purges after 30 days. BackupRoost continuously syncs every page shared with your integration into diffable Markdown (plus raw JSON for fidelity), so git history becomes your unlimited version history.

Quick start

  1. Create a Notion internal integration at notion.so/profile/integrations and copy the token.
  2. Grant it access to the top-level pages you want backed up (connection settings → Content access; access cascades to sub-pages).
  3. Run:
NOTION_TOKEN=secret_xxx npx backuproost sync --out ./backup

Runs are incremental: only pages edited since the last run are re-fetched. A run exits non-zero unless every page was synced and verified on disk, so it's safe to script against.

No terminal? No machine? The GitHub Actions template backs up your workspace nightly into a private GitHub repo — set up entirely by clicking, free.

From source: npm install && npm run build && node dist/cli.js sync --out ./backup.

Output layout

backup/
pages/<title-slug>-<id>/<Page Title>.md # page content as Markdown, named after the page
pages/<title-slug>-<id>/page.json # raw page object (properties, metadata)
  data-sources/<id>.json # database/data-source schemas
manifest-latest.json # report of the last run
  state.json # incremental sync baseline

Deleted or unshared pages are never silently removed — they're reported in the manifest and their files kept.

Status

CLI MVP done and verified: incremental sync with per-run completeness validation (every page proved on disk, ok flag in the manifest). Next per the plan: template repo + npm launch, Obsidian vault renderer, attachment download, restore.
