Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

bakemd

v0.2.4

Published

Bake a folder of Markdown into a static docs site

Readme

bakemd

npm

This package bakes doska.sh/docs and its own docs.

Do you really need a ton of js over docs?

This package is built around that question. bakemd simply renders md files into html for you to serve.

Set the theme and all necessary SEO attributes in a config (see configuration), then:

npx bakemd build

The output is a dist folder with html files that any tool can serve.

What's in the dist

  • all your md files as html files
  • ~10kb of css
  • ~1kb of js: theme switching and a copy-to-clipboard script, that's it.

Lighthouse:

Lighthouse scores: Performance 100, Best Practices 100, SEO 100, Agentic Browsing 3/3

Additional features

  • dev mode with HMR: npx bakemd dev
  • mobile-friendly layout
  • code highlight, any theme from highlight.js
  • set detailed SEO attributes
  • sitemap.xml autogenerated
  • llms.txt autogenerated

Limitations

JS is almost non-existent. That's because React, which is used to render the html pages, is not in the client bundle. If you want a lot of interactivity, this package is not for you.

Docs

The full documentation lives in docs/ and is written with bakemd, so it doubles as the example: its own theme, logo and fonts.

pnpm build:docs

That compiles the CLI into dist/ and bakes docs/ into docs-dist/.

Developing

pnpm dev serves docs/ from the sources on port 5174. Edits to src/, the styles and the Markdown reload the page; edits to src/lib/ or bin/ restart the server and the page reloads once it is back.

src/ is TypeScript and the published package is dist/ only, so build before running the CLI outside dev:

pnpm build
node dist/bin/bakemd.js build path/to/docs --out out

pnpm lint and pnpm typecheck run against the sources; pnpm publish runs both and then builds.
