Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Beatrina

Beatrina is a modern, powerful, feature-rich integrated development environment (IDE) for R, Python, and JavaScript.

It provides a unified environment for interactive computing, scientific programming, data analysis, and reproducible research. Beatrina runs locally on your computer, providing direct access to your code, computational environment, data, and installed packages.

Beatrina supports R, Python, and JavaScript notebooks, with computation performed locally on your machine.

Installation

Beatrina requires Node.js 22 or later and R.

npm install -g beatrina
beatrina

On first launch, Beatrina checks for the required R packages:

  • jsonlite
  • knitr
  • evaluate

If any are missing, Beatrina offers to install them.

Command-Line Interface

beatrina doctor

Reports the detected development environment, including Node.js, R, required R packages, Python, and the latest Beatrina version available through npm.

beatrina python setup

Creates the Python interpreter Beatrina manages (~/.beatrina/python, a virtual environment with ipykernel, pandas and matplotlib; --minimal installs ipykernel alone) from the newest Python 3.9 or later on the machine. Run it once when beatrina doctor reports no Python with ipykernel. To use another interpreter instead, set BEATRINA_PYTHON to its path, or keep a .venv beside your document.

beatrina status

Displays active Beatrina sessions.

beatrina stop

Stops the active Beatrina session.

beatrina shortcut

Creates an application icon and configures Open With integration for .qmd and .Rmd files.

beatrina check

Runs the Beatrina acceptance checks on the current machine.

beatrina upgrade

Installs the latest version of Beatrina from npm.

beatrina --version

Displays the installed Beatrina version.

Upgrading

When Beatrina starts, it periodically checks npm for a newer version and reports its availability in the terminal and in the notebook.

The available update information can also be found in the notebook under:

  • Info → Build
  • Tools ▾ → Doctor

To upgrade:

beatrina upgrade

or:

npm install -g beatrina@latest

Running sessions continue with the version they were started with. Restart the session from:

  • Session ▾ → Restart

or restart Beatrina from the terminal:

beatrina stop
beatrina

Your documents, R packages, and settings are preserved during an upgrade.

To disable the periodic update check:

BEATRINA_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1

Uninstallation

npm uninstall -g beatrina
