Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

benefits

Kota's CLI for agents and developers. Use it to:

  • get group health insurance quotes for companies in the UK and Ireland
  • book a consultation call with a Kota benefits specialist about a quote
  • install Kota agent skills so coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor and Codex know how to use it

Zero dependencies. Node 18+.

Quotes

npx benefits quote

In a terminal, you'll be asked for anything you didn't pass as a flag. To run it in one go:

npx benefits quote \
  --email [email protected] \
  --company "Acme Ltd" \
  --country UK \
  --employees 25 \
  --average-age 34 \
  --has-policy yes \
  --current-provider Bupa \
  --renewal-date 2027-01-15

| Flag | Required | Description | |---|---|---| | --email | yes | Where to send the quote | | --company | yes | Company name | | --country | yes | UK or IE. Variants like ireland, gb and united kingdom also work | | --employees | yes | Whole number, 2 to 5000 | | --average-age | yes | 16 to 75. A rough figure is fine | | --coverage | no | employee (default) or family | | --has-policy | yes | yes or no: do you have group health insurance today? | | --current-provider | if --has-policy yes | Current insurer | | --renewal-date | if --has-policy yes | YYYY-MM-DD, in the future and within 18 months |

A quote has three tiers (Essential, Standard and Comprehensive). Each tier has a price per employee per month, a monthly total and an annual total, in GBP for the UK or EUR for Ireland. The quote also has a KQ- reference, a 30-day validity date and notes about renewal timing and how pre-existing conditions are underwritten.

For agents

npx benefits quote --schema # every input as JSON: type, required, enum, description, example command
npx benefits quote ... --json # machine-readable output, never prompts

With --json, or whenever stdin or stdout isn't a terminal, the CLI never prompts. Invalid or missing input exits with code 2 and lists every problem at once:

{ "ok": false, "errors": [{ "field": "employees", "message": "Must be between 2 and 5000." }] }

A successful quote exits with code 0 and prints { "ok": true, "reference": "KQ-...", "tiers": [...], ..., "nextStep": {...} }. nextStep.command is the ready-to-run command for booking a consultation call about the quote.

Consultation calls

npx benefits book --reference KQ-7H3K9P --email [email protected] --preferred-time "Tuesday afternoon" --json

Books a free 30-minute call with a Kota benefits specialist to talk through a quote. --preferred-time is optional free text. It supports --json and --schema, and reports errors the same way as quote, with exit code 2. The result has a KB- booking reference and "status": "requested".

Agent skills

npx benefits list # list the bundled skills
npx benefits add quote # install benefits-quote into ./.claude/skills
npx benefits add quote --dir .cursor/skills

Short names work, so quote installs benefits-quote. Add --force to replace a skill you've already installed, and --json for machine-readable output.

| Skill | What it does | |---|---| | benefits-quote | Teaches an agent to collect a company's details, run benefits quote --json, handle errors and present the tiers, then offer to book a consultation call. |

Development

bin/benefits.js command routing and help text
src/args.js argument parsing
src/quote.js quote inputs, validation, prompts, output; priceQuote() holds the pricing
src/book.js consultation booking; bookCall() holds the booking
src/skills.js list and add
skills/<name>/ bundled skills, one SKILL.md each

priceQuote() in src/quote.js and bookCall() in src/book.js are where Kota's quoting and booking APIs plug in.
