Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

better-auth plugin to prevent disposable emails

Readme

better-auth-no-disposable-emails

A better-auth plugin that blocks disposable (temporary) email addresses from signing up to your app, powered by the mailchecker package.

Installation

npm install better-auth-no-disposable-emails

Usage

Add the plugin to your better-auth configuration:

import { betterAuth } from "better-auth";
import { noDisposableEmails } from "better-auth-no-disposable-emails";

export const auth = betterAuth({
  // ... your other config
  plugins: [
    noDisposableEmails(),
  ],
});

With options

import { betterAuth } from "better-auth";
import { noDisposableEmails } from "better-auth-no-disposable-emails";

export const auth = betterAuth({
  plugins: [
    noDisposableEmails({
      // Optional: custom error message returned to the client
      errorMessage: "We do not accept temporary email addresses.",

      // Optional: add extra domains to block beyond mailchecker's defaults
      customBlockedDomains: ["acmespam.com", "throwaway-mail.io"],

      // Optional: customize which auth paths are checked (default: sign-up only)
      paths: ["/sign-up/email", "/sign-in/email", "/sign-in/magic-link"],
    }),
  ],
});

Options

| Option | Type | Default | Description | |---|---|---|---| | errorMessage | string | "Disposable email addresses are not allowed." | The error message returned to the client when a disposable email is detected. | | customBlockedDomains | string[] | [] | Additional email domains to block, on top of the mailchecker defaults. | | paths | string[] | ["/sign-up/email"] | Auth endpoint paths to intercept and check for disposable emails. |

How it works

The plugin registers a before hook that intercepts auth endpoints and checks submitted emails against known disposable email providers using MailChecker.isValid(). If a disposable email is detected, a 400 BAD_REQUEST error is returned with the error code DISPOSABLE_EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED.

By default, only POST /sign-up/email is intercepted. You can extend coverage to other paths:

noDisposableEmails({
  paths: [
    "/sign-up/email",
    "/sign-in/email",
    "/sign-in/magic-link",
    "/email-otp/send-verification-otp",
  ],
})

Usage with Next.js

// app/api/auth/[...all]/route.ts
import { auth } from "@/lib/auth";
import { toNextJsHandler } from "better-auth/next-js";

export const { GET, POST } = toNextJsHandler(auth);
// lib/auth.ts
import { betterAuth } from "better-auth";
import { noDisposableEmails } from "better-auth-no-disposable-emails";

export const auth = betterAuth({
  database: /* your database adapter */,
  emailAndPassword: { enabled: true },
  plugins: [
    noDisposableEmails({
      errorMessage: "Please use a permanent email address to sign up.",
    }),
  ],
});
