Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

🅱️orygon

npm GitHub Workflow Status

🅱️orygon is a WebSocket client for interacting with Pokémon Showdown. It provides strongly typed messages for the Pokémon Showdown messages it supports. It vends two clients:

  • RawShowdownClient: A thin wrapper around ws that parses incoming Pokémon Showdown messages and exposes them through an event emitter.
  • ManagedShowdownClient: A more feature-rich wrapper around RawShowdownClient that provides more features like retries and convenience functions for logging into Pokémon Showdown

Project Status

🅱️orygon supports the vast majority of Pokémon Showdown messages with an emphasis on supporting events still actively used by Pokémon Showdown and also tries to support older, deprecated messages whenever possible. Through live testing (connecting a bot to several of Pokémon Showdown's public chat rooms and public battles and deserializing/serializing all incoming messages), 99.9999% of messages are accurately handled. Despite this high rate of support, the project will remain below 1.0.0 until:

  • all current message types are supported
  • all messages types have unit tests
  • a canary-like system is implemented to determine if there are any new message usages that break this client's expectations
  • full documentation of all public functions and types (especially message types)

🅱️orygon can be adopted and should, but care should be taken to handle errors whenever possible as there will likely always be situations that 🅱️orygon does not handle properly with older messages in replays or new Pokémon Showdown functionality that hasn't been imlemented yet.

Planned Features

  1. A more battle-oriented client that handles similar logic for reading messages and determining the state of a battle, similar to what the Pokémon Showdown client does
  2. A convenience tool for parsing replays
