Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Features

  • Multi-Viewport Preview: See 375px, 768px, 1024px, 1440px side by side. No more tab switching.
  • Per-Viewport URL Bar: Type a path, hit Enter. Each viewport navigates independently.
  • Hide/Show Viewports: Collapse what you don't need. Click to restore. State persists across reloads.
  • Scroll Sync: Toggle synchronized scrolling across all viewports from the settings popover.
  • HMR Pass-Through: Vite, Webpack, Next.js, SvelteKit. Hot reload just works.
  • Standalone Window: --app opens in Chrome/Chromium without browser UI.
  • Custom Breakpoints: Define any widths you want.
  • Zero Dependencies: Just Node.js.

Quick Start

npx breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173

Or install globally:

npm install -g breakpoint-preview
breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173

As an AI agent skill:

npx skills add enisbu/breakpoint-preview

Usage

# Preview a dev server (http or https)
breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173

# Standalone window (no browser chrome)
breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173 --app

# Custom breakpoints
breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173 --breakpoints 320,768,1024,1920

# Custom port
breakpoint-preview http://localhost:5173 --port 9000

# Static files
breakpoint-preview ./dist/index.html

How It Works

A local proxy server forwards all requests to your dev server. This makes all viewports same-origin, enabling scroll sync and per-viewport URL tracking. WebSocket connections (HMR) are passed through transparently. No browser extensions. No config files. No dependencies.

Works With

Any framework that runs a dev server: Vite, Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Astro, Remix, Gatsby, plain HTML. HTTP and HTTPS URLs are both supported. If it has a URL, it works.

AI Agent Support

Includes a SKILL.md so AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, etc.) can discover and use it automatically. Agents can launch the preview, navigate viewports, and check responsive behavior on your behalf.
