Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Brickolage 🧱

A tiny modern Masonry alternative, created with CSS3 Flexbox + vanilla JavaScript. Based on an elegant idea of Tobias Bjerrome Ahlin.

Update 2023: This is a slightly improved version of my own lib.

Demo

Features:

- Dependency-free.
  • Pure CSS3 Flexbox layout + a little bit of JavaScript. Number of columns is determined by item width via CSS.
  • Grid items stay untouched. No removing/adding DOM elements except separators.
  • No possible issues with absolutely positioned grid items, because it's a Flexbox layout as is.

Setting up

  1. Add a link to the css file in the <head> tag of your index.html:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="assets/brickolage.build.css">
  1. Insert before your closing <body> tag:
<script src="assets/brickolage.build.js"></script>
  1. Add markup to your index.html:
<ul class="brickolage--container">
	<li class="brickolage--item">
		...
	</li>

	<li class="brickolage--item">
		...
	</li>

	<li class="brickolage--item">
		...
	</li>
</ul>
  1. Initialize script in your app.js:
var fire = function() {
	var brcklg = new Brickolage();
}

( document.readyState === "complete" || ( document.readyState !== "loading" && ! document.documentElement.doScroll ) ) && fire() || document.addEventListener( "DOMContentLoaded", fire );

Options

| Option | Description | | ------ | ------ | | container | Specify a selector or HTML element. Default: ".brickolage--container" | | item | Specify a selector or HTMLCollection. Default: ".brickolage--item" | | separatorClassName | A column separator className. Default: "brickolage--separator" | | separatorTagName | A column separator tagName. Default: "li" | | originalOrder | Determines the items order style. Default: false |

Be careful when changing default container, item and separatorClassName options, because of core styles.

Specify script options:

new Brickolage( {
	container: "[data-brickolage]",
	originalOrder: true
} );

Methods

| Method | Description | | ------ | ------ | | reLayout | Use to quickly update the container height and the items order. | | reFresh | Trigger this method after items were added or removed. Accepts new options. | | destroy | Destroys and cleans up the DOM. Returns elements to pre-initialized state. Callback function returns a destroyed instance. |

Call method after initialization:

brcklg.Method();
