Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

The entertainment layer for developers — install and play instantly

Readme

ByteBreak

The entertainment layer for developers.

Turn AI limits and long waits into 90-second engineering games — in your terminal.

Install & play

npm install -g bytebreak
bytebreak
npx bytebreak

If you get EACCES on global install:

npm config set prefix ~/.local
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
npm install -g bytebreak

First run creates ~/.bytebreak, starts a background daemon, installs shell hooks, and starts a game. No config files to edit. No API keys.

Version: see bytebreak version (package 0.1.5+).

Commands

bytebreak # setup (once) + play
bytebreak -g output-rush # pick a game
bytebreak -r # random game
bytebreak -l python # language
bytebreak games
bytebreak limit # signal any AI agent hit a limit
bytebreak status
bytebreak doctor
bytebreak settings
bytebreak stop
bytebreak version

Auto-suggest

When a high-signal wait is detected (rate limit, long install, long shell command), ByteBreak shows a tip on your next shell prompt:

  ⚡ ByteBreak
Your AI agent is sleeping 😴
Rate limit or wait — ready for a 90-second battle?
  → run bytebreak for a 90s battle

Works for any agent (Grok, Claude, Codex, Gemini, …) — messaging is brand-agnostic.

bytebreak limit # post a tip now
bytebreak settings --set desktopNotify=false
bytebreak settings --set suggestionsEnabled=false

Tips appear in the terminal, not inside IDE chat UIs. Always-on apps like Cursor IDE are not treated as “AI waiting” (avoids spam).

Games

| ID | Idea | |----|------| | bug-blitz | Find the bug | | output-rush | Guess the output | | sql-sprint | Optimize the query | | docker-dash | Fix the Dockerfile | | git-arena | Resolve the merge conflict |

Privacy

Source code is never collected or uploaded. Anonymous play by default. Shell hooks send command basenames only.

Requirements

  • Node.js 20+
  • Linux / macOS (Windows: CLI play works; desktop notify best-effort)
