Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Install skills from GitHub repos into Claude Desktop

Readme

claude-desktop-skills

CLI tool that packages skills from GitHub repos into .skill files for Claude Desktop.

Prerequisites

Quick Start

npx claude-desktop-skills pack <owner/repo>

Then upload in Claude Desktop: Customize → Skills → + → Create skill → Upload a skill

Upload a skill in Claude Desktop

Works with npx and bunx.

Commands

# Pack all skills from a repo
npx claude-desktop-skills pack <owner/repo>

# Pack a specific skill only
npx claude-desktop-skills pack <owner/repo> --skill <skill-name>

# Custom output directory
npx claude-desktop-skills pack <owner/repo> --output ./my-skills

# List skills in a repo (without packing)
npx claude-desktop-skills list <owner/repo>

# Search across cached repos
npx claude-desktop-skills find <query>

Output goes to skills-pack/<repo>-<timestamp>/ with a README and all .skill files.

Install globally (optional)

npm install -g claude-desktop-skills

How it works

  1. Clones the GitHub repo locally (temp, removed after packing)
  2. Scans for directories containing SKILL.md
  3. Extracts name/description from YAML frontmatter
  4. Zips each skill folder into a .skill file (the format Claude Desktop expects)

Why not npx skills?

vercel-labs/skills is a general-purpose skill manager for 55+ AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.). It installs skills by symlinking into agent-specific directories like .claude/skills/.

claude-desktop-skills solves a different problem — it targets Claude Desktop, which doesn't read from .claude/skills/. Claude Desktop requires .skill files uploaded through its UI. No other tool produces this format.

| | claude-desktop-skills | vercel-labs/skills | |---|---|---| | Target | Claude Desktop | Claude Code + 55 agents | | Output | .skill zip files for upload | Symlinks to agent directories | | Workflow | npx claude-desktop-skills pack → upload in UI | npx skills add → ready to use | | Unique value | Only tool that produces .skill format | Multi-agent support |

TL;DR — Use vercel-labs/skills if you're in Claude Code or other coding agents. Use claude-desktop-skills if you need skills in Claude Desktop.
