Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

claude-pets

Choose your own Claude Code companion pet. Pick your species, rarity, eyes, hat, and stats — then apply it instantly.

npx claude-pets

No Bun required. No native addons. Just Node 18+.

What it does

Claude Code assigns you a random companion pet based on your account ID. You can't change it through normal means. claude-pets lets you pick exactly the pet you want by finding a salt that produces your desired combination, then patching the Claude Code binary to use it.

Examples

# Interactive — walks you through everything
claude-pets

# Preview without applying
claude-pets preview -s cat -r epic

# See what you have now
claude-pets current

# After a Claude Code update
claude-pets apply

# Go back to your original pet
claude-pets restore

Auto-patch hook

Claude Code updates can reset your pet. During setup, claude-pets offers to install a SessionStart hook that re-applies your pet automatically (~50ms overhead). You can also install it manually:

claude-pets apply --silent # what the hook runs

To remove the hook:

claude-pets restore

How it works

  1. Generates your pet using the same algorithm as Claude Code — wyhash + Mulberry32 PRNG seeded from userId + salt
  2. Brute-forces a salt that produces your desired species/rarity/eye/hat combination using worker_threads
  3. Patches the Claude Code binary by replacing the salt string at all occurrences (same length, no offset shifts)
  4. Re-signs the binary on macOS with codesign --force --sign -
  5. Backs up the original binary before the first patch

The wyhash implementation is pure JavaScript (BigInt arithmetic), tested against Bun.hash() with 25 fixture pairs for bit-exact parity. No Bun dependency needed.

Safety

  • Creates a backup of the Claude Code binary before patching (<binary>.claude-pets-bak)
  • Uses atomic file writes (temp file + rename) so the binary is never in a half-written state
  • Verification step confirms the new salt is present at all expected offsets
  • claude-pets restore always works — patches back to the original salt
  • The backup file is never deleted automatically
