Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Codex Mac File Detective

A privacy-first Codex skill that finds forgotten or misplaced Mac files from the clues you remember, even when you do not know the filename or folder.

Describe the content, approximate date, file type, creating application, project, color, logo, or visual layout. Mac File Detective combines local Spotlight evidence, filenames, document text, metadata, dates, and optional Quick Look inspection to return a short ranked list with an explanation for every candidate.

Install

npx --yes codex-mac-file-detective@latest

Restart Codex after installation. The skill requires macOS.

Use

Use $mac-file-detective to find the screenshot with a green pricing table that I saved last month.

Other examples:

Find the PDF invoice from the design supplier I downloaded around March.
Find the presentation about customer onboarding that I edited in Keynote last summer.
Find the code file where I wrote the retry logic for failed uploads.

What it searches

  • Filename and parent folders
  • Spotlight-indexed content
  • Text inside common documents and Office files
  • Creation and modification dates
  • File kind and extension
  • Creator and author metadata
  • Local Quick Look previews for visual clues

The result is saved to:

outputs/mac-file-detective/search.json
outputs/mac-file-detective/previews/
outputs/mac-file-detective/FILE-DETECTIVE-REPORT.md

The Markdown report opens directly in Codex and contains clickable local paths, sanitized excerpts, preview images, match evidence, the searched scope, and limitations.

Privacy and safety

Search remains local and read-only. The skill does not upload, move, rename, delete, edit, open, or permanently index files. It searches only the stated folders and excludes sensitive system locations, hidden folders, credential stores, private keys, browser profiles, Mail stores, dependency trees, caches, and application bundles by default.

Manual installation

git clone https://github.com/Kappaemme-git/codex-mac-file-detective.git
mkdir -p ~/.codex/skills
cp -R codex-mac-file-detective/mac-file-detective ~/.codex/skills/mac-file-detective
