Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Create an OrbitJS site

Readme

create-orbitjs 🚀

create-orbitjs scaffolds a new Orbit project.

Create a new site with:

npm create orbitjs@latest my-notes

Then:

cd my-notes
npm install
npm run dev

The generated Orbit project is a minimalist static site generator for markdown-based learning notes.

Documentation

  • Master onboarding: get-started.md
  • Content authoring: docs/content-authoring.md
  • Architecture internals: docs/architecture.md
  • Deployment workflow: docs/deployment.md
  • Quick deployment steps: DEPLOYMENT_CHECKLIST.md

Highlights

  • Markdown-first workflow with frontmatter support (.md and .mdx files are parsed as markdown content)
  • Auto-generated sidebar from folder structure
  • Flexible ordering with frontmatter, _meta.json, or filename/folder prefixes
  • Built-in pagination between pages
  • Build-time SEO pipeline (meta tags, JSON-LD, sitemap, robots, RSS, report)
  • Watch mode for local iteration

Quick Start

1) Install dependencies

npm install

2) Build site

npm run build

3) Develop with live rebuild

npm run dev

4) Preview built output

npm run preview

Build Commands

  • npm run build — full site build into dist/
  • npm run dev — watch mode + rebuild on source changes
  • npm run preview — serve built site locally
  • npm run seo:check — run build pipeline and write SEO report
  • npm run lint — syntax checks for core JS files

Content Location and Output

Source

  • src/pages/** — markdown content
  • src/styles/** — site CSS copied into build
  • public/** — static assets copied to dist/content/assets/

Output

  • Root landing page: dist/index.html
  • Content pages: dist/content/<clean-route>/index.html
  • Course index pages: dist/content/<course-slug>/index.html

Orbit uses directory-style routes, so links look like:

  • /content/web-dev/intro/
  • /content/compTia-a-plus/mobile-devices/laptop-hardware-components/

Folder and File Naming

You can prefix folders/files with ordering markers. Orbit strips these from the final route and UI label.

Examples:

  • [1]__web-dev/
  • [1.1]__css-basics/
  • [1.1.0]__selectors.md
  • Legacy numeric format like 01-intro.md also works

Ordering Rules (Highest Priority First)

| Priority | Method | Scope | |---|---|---| | 1 | Frontmatter order | Per file | | 2 | Parent _meta.json items mapping | Per file | | 3 | Prefix order ([n]__name or 01-name) | File/folder | | 4 | Alphabetical fallback | File/folder |

_meta.json (Per Folder)

Place a _meta.json inside any content folder to control folder label/order and child item order.

{
  "order": 1,
  "label": "Web Dev",
  "items": {
    "learn-html": 1,
    "learn-javascript": 2
  }
}

Field meanings:

  • order — position of this folder in parent sidebar
  • label — display name override in sidebar
  • items — map of clean child filename/folder-name to sort index

Frontmatter Reference

Orbit reads frontmatter for both navigation and SEO:

---
title: Laptop Hardware Components
description: Understand laptop hardware components for CompTIA A+ prep.
author: Webnotes
order: 1
image: /content/assets/laptop-og.png
keywords:
  - comptia a+
  - laptop hardware
canonical: https://webnotes.site/content/compTia-a-plus/mobile-devices/laptop-hardware-components/
twitterCard: summary_large_image
twitterSite: "@webnotes"
schemaType: TechArticle
date: 2026-04-08
lastModified: 2026-04-09
---

Global Metadata (metadata.json)

Create/edit metadata.json at project root to define defaults used across the whole site.

{
  "siteName": "Webnotes",
  "url": "https://webnotes.site",
  "defaultTitle": "Webnotes",
  "defaultDescription": "Practical learning notes for web development, programming, and tech concepts.",
  "defaultImage": "/content/assets/og-default.png",
  "author": "Webnotes",
  "twitterCard": "summary_large_image",
  "twitterSite": "@webnotes",
  "language": "en",
  "strictSeo": false,
  "minifyHtml": true,
  "keywords": [
    "web development notes",
    "programming notes",
    "developer learning"
  ]
}

Metadata fields

  • siteName — brand/site label used in title composition
  • url — canonical site base URL (required for best sitemap/canonical/feed output)
  • defaultTitle — fallback title
  • defaultDescription — fallback description
  • defaultImage — fallback social image (relative or absolute URL)
  • author — default author
  • twitterCard — default twitter card type
  • twitterSite — default twitter handle
  • language — page language
  • keywords — fallback keyword list
  • strictSeo — fail build when SEO warnings exist
  • minifyHtml — minify generated HTML

SEO Pipeline (Autogenerated During Build)

Orbit generates SEO data automatically every build:

  • Page-level <title>, <meta name="description">, OpenGraph, and Twitter tags
  • Canonical URLs
  • JSON-LD structured data (TechArticle by default, override with schemaType)
  • dist/sitemap.xml
  • dist/robots.txt
  • dist/feed.xml (RSS)
  • dist/seo-report.json

SEO fallback strategy per page

For each page, Orbit resolves fields in this order:

  1. Frontmatter value
  2. Auto-generated value from markdown content (for description excerpt)
  3. Global default from metadata.json

This ensures each page has usable SEO even if only minimal frontmatter is provided.

Pagination and Navigation

  • Sidebar and page order are generated from the same internal tree.
  • Previous/Next links are automatically injected into every content page.
  • Active page state is reflected in sidebar navigation.

Troubleshooting

  • Missing canonical/sitemap URLs:
    • Ensure metadata.json has a valid url
  • Build fails in strict SEO mode:
    • Check dist/seo-report.json and fix warnings
  • Sidebar order not as expected:
    • Verify order in frontmatter, _meta.json, and filename prefixes
  • Social image not showing:
    • Confirm image path exists in public/ (or use absolute URL)

Recommended Workflow

  1. Add/update content in src/pages
  2. Fill frontmatter for important pages (title, description, image, date)
  3. Run npm run build
  4. Review dist/seo-report.json
  5. Use npm run preview to verify pages and metadata output locally
