Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Start a community site on the Popular Astro theme: npm create popular-site@latest

create-popular-site

Start a community site on Popular, a warm, community-first Astro theme for meetups, user groups and small events.

npm create popular-site@latest

or, skipping the questions:

npm create popular-site@latest my-community -- --template aquarium --site https://my.community --yes

Templates

| Template | What it is | |---|---| | starter | "Your Community": a neutral skeleton, ready to fill in. The default. | | aquarium | Rocky Cove Aquarium Club: a fuller meetup example | | foodie | Lucky Town Foodie Club: a fuller meetup example | | kdrama | KDrama Fan Club: a fan community with a photo gallery | | superfan | Truly Madly Riley: a personal site, no organizers |

All of them are fictional. The flavored ones are useful when you would rather edit something down than fill something in.

What you get

A small project that depends on the theme rather than containing a copy of it:

popular.config.ts your settings: name, nav, footer, brand, UI strings
src/content/ your events, posts, organizers, speakers, venues, docs
src/content.config.ts one line, adopting the theme's content model
public/images/ your images
astro.config.mjs site + base, and the theme integration

Updating is npm update astro-theme-popular. You are not holding a copy of the theme, so there is nothing to re-merge, which is what makes a site survive being handed to the next organizer.

Options

| Flag | Meaning | |---|---| | -t, --template <name> | one of the templates above (default starter) | | --site <url> | the URL the site will be served from. A project-page URL like https://you.github.io/my-community/ is split into Astro's site and base for you. | | -y, --yes | accept defaults, ask nothing (also the behavior when stdin is not a TTY) |

Licence

MIT. The theme, its demos and this scaffolder all ship from Mariatta/astro-theme-popular.
