Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

RelicJS

RelicJS is a backend framework for Node.js that provides a Laravel-like structure and developer experience, designed for building robust and scalable applications with speed and elegance.

It combines the power and simplicity of Express.js with the productivity-enhancing features of modern frameworks, such as a powerful CLI, filesystem abstraction, task scheduling, and a built-in queue system.

Philosophy

RelicJS aims to make the development process a pleasing one without sacrificing application functionality. It provides a pre-configured, feature-rich starting point, allowing you to focus on writing code that matters. Happy developers make the best code.

Features

  • MVC Architecture: Clean, organized, and scalable project structure.
  • Powerful CLI: An artisan-like tool (craft) for generating controllers, models, queues, and more.
  • Filesystem Abstraction: A simple, unified API for interacting with local and (eventually) cloud storage.
  • Task Scheduling: A fluent, node-cron-based scheduler to run your background tasks on a timetable.
  • Built-in Queue System: Offload long-running tasks to a background queue.
  • Production Optimizations: Built-in commands (config:cache) to boost performance in production.
  • Advanced Routing: A fluent, chainable route builder for creating groups, prefixes, and applying middleware.
  • Security-First: Comes with helmet pre-configured for common security headers.

Installation

Install the CLI globally using npm:

npm install -g create-relic-app

Quick Start

  1. Create a new project:

    create-relic-app my-awesome-project
  2. Navigate to your project directory:

    cd my-awesome-project
  3. Install dependencies:

    npm install
  4. Configure your environment:

    • Copy the .env.example file to a new file named .env.
    • Update the .env file with your database credentials.
  5. Run database migrations:

    node craft make:migration create_users_table
    npx knex migrate:latest
  6. Start the development server:

    npm start

Your application is now running at http://localhost:3000.

The craft CLI

The generated project includes a powerful command-line tool to speed up your workflow.

  • Cache Configuration:

    node craft config:cache
  • Create a Controller:

    node craft make:controller PostController
  • Create a Model:

    node craft make:model Post
  • Create a Queue Job:

    node craft make:queue ProcessPayment
