Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

DeviantArt Archiver

Archive any DeviantArt user/group galleries and favourites locally.

(Sane download timeouts are set to 6 seconds.)

Note: Recent DeviantArt network changes to DoS detection has necessitated a very low frequency of API calls.

Install

npm i -g da-archiver

Command example

da-archiver -b ~/da/archives/ -u myuser1 f!myuser1favsonly -g mygroup1

Command args

  • -u: usernames (space separated) [optional]
  • -g: groups (space separated) [optional]
  • -b: basefolder [optional]
  • -q: quitEarly [optional]

Note: you must provide at least -u or -g; or both. Note: -q quits archiving as soon as existing DeviantArt files are detected. (Recommended)

Command arg modifiers

  • prefix with g!<username> to avoid archiving the username's gallery.
    • Eg. g!hyung86 = "don't download their gallery"
  • prefix with f!<username> to avoid archiving the username's favourites.
    • Eg. f!hyung86 = "don't download their favourites"

Archive folder structure

This tool expects a filesystem structure of a "base" folder, under which each user/group's archive is kept inside its own folder, organized by the user's image gallery (under its own folder) and favourites (under its _favourites subfolder).

Eg:

~/da <--root folder of all DeviantArt users
~/da/user1              <--user1 gallery folder
~/da/user1/_favourites  <--user1 favourites folder

Debug logs

This package uses debug.

  • main
  • downloader
  • favs:http
  • fav:http
  • fav:process
  • gallery
  • group
  • * for all debug loggers

Eg. PowerShell env:

$env:DEBUG='*';da-archiver ...

$env:DEBUG='downloader';da-archiver ...

Tools (power-user bonus)

If you git clone this repo, there are a few helper tools for "bonus discovery" features. These scripts are found in the ./src/tools folder.

Note: argument order matters, all required!!

These scripts can be run like such, for example (in Powershell):

update-best-galleries (tools:ubg)

npm run tools:ubg -- {root_folder} {best_users.md}

  • Updates the galleries of your "best"/top users by tracking them in a formatted markdown list: $env:DEBUG='downloader';node .\src\tools\update-best-galleries.js {root_folder} {best_users.md}

discover-popular (tools:dp)

npm run tools:dp -- {root_folder} {discover_archive_file.txt}

  • Scrapes your existing users' favourites, to see which ones are "popular" on DeviantArt, and store user list in a file: $env:DEBUG='downloader';node .\src\tools\discover-popular.js {root_folder} {discover_archive_file.txt}

sample-art (tools:sa)

npm run tools:sa -- {root_folder} {discover_archive_file.txt}

  • Downloads one sample image from each users' gallery which is listed in this text file (i.e. to get a feel for their art style): $env:DEBUG='downloader';node .\src\tools\sample-art.js {root_folder} {discover_archive_file.txt}
