Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

dar-autocomplete

v0.1.0

Published

Framework-agnostic Danish address autocomplete backed by Adressevaelger.dk

Readme

dar-autocomplete

Framework-agnostic autocomplete for Danish addresses using Adressevaelger.dk.

Install

npm install dar-autocomplete

Browser / native JavaScript

<label for="address">Adresse</label>
<input id="address" name="address" required>
import { attachDarAutocomplete } from 'dar-autocomplete/browser'
import 'dar-autocomplete/style.css'

const autocomplete = attachDarAutocomplete(
  document.querySelector<HTMLInputElement>('#address')!,
  {
    token: 'your-client-token',
    onChange(address) {
      console.log(address) // { id, title } or null
    }
  }
)

The existing input stays the real form field. Selecting a final address updates its visible text. autocomplete.value contains the selected address id/title.

Available methods:

autocomplete.value
autocomplete.validate()
autocomplete.clear()
autocomplete.focus()
autocomplete.destroy()

Important: browser tokens are public

A token passed to browser JavaScript cannot be secret. If your Adressevaelger token must remain private, put it on your server and pass a proxy client instead:

import { createProxyClient } from 'dar-autocomplete'
import { attachDarAutocomplete } from 'dar-autocomplete/browser'

attachDarAutocomplete(input, {
  client: createProxyClient({ baseUrl: '/api/address' })
})

The proxy contract is intentionally tiny:

  • GET /api/address/search?q=fund&limit=10 -> DarSuggestion[]
  • GET /api/address/:id -> { id, title, postnummer? }

This will be expanded later!

Direct client

import { createAdressevaelgerClient } from 'dar-autocomplete'

const client = createAdressevaelgerClient({ token: '...' })
const suggestions = await client.search('fund')

Search results retain Adressevaelger's supported result types:

  • adresse is a selectable final address and has an id.
  • husnummer, vejnavn and navngivenvejpostnummer are refinement suggestions. Selecting one continues the search with that text.

Options

attachDarAutocomplete(input, options) accepts:

  • client - custom DarClient. Takes precedence over direct token settings.
  • token - token for direct Adressevaelger browser requests.
  • baseUrl - defaults to https://adressevaelger.dk.
  • value - initial { id, title } value.
  • initialAddressId - loads an initial address by id.
  • required, disabled, error.
  • minSearchLength - default 2.
  • debounceMs - default 250.
  • maxSuggestions - default 10, provider requests are capped at 20.
  • onChange(value) - called for selection and when an edited selection becomes invalid.
  • onSelect(value) - called only when a final address is selected.

Accessibility

The browser adapter implements the combobox/listbox ARIA pattern, keyboard navigation, live status messages, native form validity, required, disabled, readonly, form reset, and cleanup through destroy().
