Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v2.3.1

deskbuddy-c3

Install, erase and monitor the firmware of a DeskBuddy C3: the pocket desk companion on an ESP32-C3 Super Mini, with an animated face called Mochi, a clock and your phone's notifications.

npm install -g deskbuddy-c3
deskbuddy flash

No Python, PlatformIO or Arduino IDE needed. The first run downloads a ready-made program for your computer (about 20 MB) from the project's GitHub release, checks its SHA-256 checksum, and keeps it in ~/.deskbuddy/app. After that, deskbuddy starts at once.

Commands

| Command | What it does | |---|---| | deskbuddy flash | Install the latest firmware (keeps your settings and WiFi) | | deskbuddy flash --env battery | Install the battery build | | deskbuddy erase | Wipe the board completely (asks first) | | deskbuddy monitor | Serial monitor; type commands, Ctrl+C quits | | deskbuddy status | Show link mode, screen, time and memory | | deskbuddy link ble / link wifi | Switch Bluetooth ↔ WiFi | | deskbuddy wifi-forget | Forget the saved WiFi (in WiFi mode, the setup network opens) | | deskbuddy ui | Installer window with a live serial monitor | | deskbuddy doctor | Check that everything is ready |

deskbuddy --help lists them all. The full guide is in the repository.

Supported computers

Windows 10/11 (x64, and ARM through emulation), Linux (x64 and arm64, glibc 2.35 or newer, e.g. Ubuntu 22.04+ or Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm) and macOS (Apple silicon and Intel). Node.js 18 or newer.

On anything else, use the Python version, which has the same commands plus deskbuddy build:

pip install "git+https://github.com/MONKEYDPARI019/DeskBuddy-C3#subdirectory=tool"

Update or remove

npm update -g deskbuddy-c3 # newest version; its program is downloaded on the next run
npm uninstall -g deskbuddy-c3 # then delete ~/.deskbuddy/app to free the space

Environment variables

| Variable | Effect | |---|---| | DESKBUDDY_HOME | Keep the program and downloads somewhere other than ~/.deskbuddy | | DESKBUDDY_DOWNLOAD_BASE | Take the release files from this URL or folder instead of GitHub (offline installs: a folder holding SHA256SUMS and the .tar.gz for your computer) | | DESKBUDDY_BINARY | Run this program instead of the downloaded one (for testing a local build) |
