Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

deskfolio

v0.1.1

Published

A pocket-sized portfolio that opens like a book: flip-through pages, draggable stickers, and self-drawing scribble underlines.

DeskFolio

A pocket-sized portfolio that opens like a book. Built as a tiny desk scene with a flip-through book on a spring, draggable/swappable stickers, and hand-drawn marker underlines that draw themselves on hover.

Live demo: https://feralui.vercel.app/#/deskfolio

Showcase

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/809826f0-437d-4c35-ab77-4b2f633e8c2c

Highlights

  • The book opens and turns pages on a spring. Drag a corner, tap a side, or use the arrow keys.
  • Desk stickers are draggable, resizable, and swappable via a long-press radial menu.
  • Self-drawing scribble underlines: each project name gets a real marker scribble that a "pen" traces along its own path on hover (the centerline is derived from the filled SVG shape, then drawn via stroke-dashoffset inside a mask).
  • Editable text: the journal/about copy is editable in place.

Install

npm install deskfolio

Peer deps (provide these in your app): react, react-dom, motion.

Usage

import { DeskFolio } from 'deskfolio'
import 'deskfolio/styles.css'

export default function Page() {
  return <DeskFolio />
}

DeskFolioPage is also exported if you want to supply your own page wrapper.

Assets

DeskFolio loads its stickers/backgrounds from absolute paths (/stickers/…, /backgrounds/…, /mort-profile.webp). Copy the shipped assets into your app's web root so they resolve:

cp -r node_modules/deskfolio/public/* public/

(They live under deskfolio/public: stickers/, backgrounds/, and the two .webp images.)

Tech

  • React 19 + motion.dev
  • Vite + TypeScript
  • web-haptics for tactile feedback
  • Assets: a mix of Freepik + hand-built SVGs

Run locally

npm install
npm run dev

Build for production:

npm run build
