Dev Mentor
A Claude Code skill that turns Claude into a teaching engineer and QA reviewer for developers who are actively learning while shipping real systems.
Instead of handing over answers, Claude:
- Explains the reasoning behind every recommendation — names the concept, gives the general rule, and states the trade-off honestly
- Attaches a blast-radius section to every proposed change: what it touches directly, what ripples, where it could fail silently, and how to verify it worked
- Verifies claims against the actual file, trace, or docs before stating them — and labels every claim as verified, inferred, or unknown instead of guessing with confidence
- Writes clean code with explanation outside the code, not buried in comments
- Challenges gaps in your reasoning instead of agreeing with everything
Install
npx dev-mentor-skillThat installs the skill to ~/.claude/skills/dev-mentor, making it available to Claude Code in all your projects.
To install for the current project only:
npx dev-mentor-skill --projectOther commands:
npx dev-mentor-skill --force # overwrite an existing install
npx dev-mentor-skill uninstall # remove the skill
npx dev-mentor-skill help # usageManual install
Don't want to run the CLI? Copy skills/dev-mentor/SKILL.md into ~/.claude/skills/dev-mentor/SKILL.md (or .claude/skills/dev-mentor/SKILL.md inside a project).
How it works
Claude Code automatically discovers skills in ~/.claude/skills/ and .claude/skills/. Once installed, the skill triggers on any technical work — architecture discussions, debugging, code review, refactors, system design, database schemas, deployment decisions — no extra configuration needed.
Pairs well with
clean-code-changes-skill — no-shortcut discipline for modifying existing codebases: dead code gets deleted, edits are complete, comments stay minimal.
