Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

doctor-mcp-cli

v0.1.1

Published

Diagnose MCP client configuration and stdio server startup problems.

Readme

doctor-mcp-cli

CI npm version npm downloads License: MIT

Stop guessing why your MCP server is broken.

Run it as doctor-mcp.

doctor-mcp is a zero-config CLI that scans MCP client config files, checks commands, environment variables, and local paths, then starts stdio MCP servers to verify that tools/list actually works.

doctor-mcp terminal demo

npx doctor-mcp-cli

npm package: https://www.npmjs.com/package/doctor-mcp-cli

OK Claude Desktop: config found
ERROR github: missing environment variable GITHUB_TOKEN
ERROR filesystem: path does not exist: D:\work\missing
OK playwright: tools/list succeeded

Summary: 2 OK, 0 WARN, 2 ERROR, 0 SKIP

Why

MCP config failures are often boring but painful: a missing token, a bad path, a command that is not on PATH, or a server that starts but exposes no tools. doctor-mcp turns those failures into a short diagnosis you can act on.

Supported Clients

| Client | Config support | Startup probe | | --- | --- | --- | | Claude Desktop | Platform-specific desktop config | stdio | | Claude Code | Project .mcp.json, global settings | stdio | | Cursor | Project and global mcp.json | stdio | | VS Code | Workspace .vscode/mcp.json | stdio | | Windsurf | Project and global mcp.json | stdio, HTTP/SSE reachability | | Cline | Project .cline/mcp.json | stdio, HTTP/SSE reachability | | Roo Code | Project .roo/mcp.json | stdio, HTTP/SSE reachability | | Continue | Project and global config | stdio, HTTP/SSE reachability |

HTTP/SSE servers receive a lightweight URL reachability check. doctor-mcp never edits your config.

Install

npm install -g doctor-mcp-cli
doctor-mcp

Or run without installing:

npx doctor-mcp-cli

Usage

doctor-mcp [options]

Options:
--config <path> check one config file instead of auto-discovery
--json print a machine-readable JSON report
--ci print only warnings and errors for CI logs
--no-start only run static checks, do not start MCP servers
--timeout <ms> stdio server probe timeout in milliseconds (default: 8000)

What It Checks

  • JSON parse errors
  • mcpServers and VS Code servers config shapes
  • missing commands such as node, python, uvx, or npx
  • missing environment variables such as ${env:GITHUB_TOKEN}
  • local path arguments that do not exist
  • stdio MCP startup and tools/list
  • HTTP/SSE URL reachability
  • startup timeouts, with cleanup for the spawned process

JSON Output

doctor-mcp --json

The JSON report includes sources, servers, checks, and summary, making it usable from scripts or CI.

Development

npm install
npm run build
npm test
npm run dev -- --json
