Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

dokai-kit

Local-first documentation, dropped into any repo with one command.

npm License

dokai-kit scaffolds a DOKAI/ markdown tree into your project and serves a live, local documentation UI (React + Vite) on localhost:8128. No SaaS, no telemetry — your docs live as markdown in your repo and Git history. The engine and UI ship inside this package; only your data lands in the repo. (The package is dokai-kit; the CLI command it installs is dokai.)

Requires Node.js 22+.

Quick start

# Add dokai-kit to your project (npm / pnpm / yarn / bun)
pnpm add -D dokai-kit

# Scaffold docs (idempotent — safe to re-run); the command is "dokai"
pnpm exec dokai init # or: npx dokai-kit init

# Launch the docs UI on http://localhost:8128
pnpm dokai # runs the "dokai dev --port 8128" script init added

Prefer global? npm install -g dokai-kit, then dokai init and dokai dev from any repo.

Bare dokai defaults to the dev server, so dokai (global), npx dokai-kit, or pnpm exec dokai all start the UI with no subcommand. With npm scripts it's npm run dokai (npm has no npm <script> shorthand); pnpm dokai / yarn dokai work without run.

Commands

| Command | What it does | | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | dokai init | Scaffold DOKAI/, .claude/ assets, patch package.json scripts + .gitignore | | dokai dev | Boot the live documentation UI (default port 8128) | | dokai build | Produce a static, deployable read-only site under DOKAI/.dokai/dist/ | | dokai preview | Serve the most recent static build locally | | dokai generate | Re-emit the Claude templates and rebuild the MiniSearch index without launching the UI | | dokai update | Re-run scaffolding to pull in new files from a newer DOKAI version | | dokai bump | Bump frontmatter versions on docs / sections |

Highlights

  • WYSIWYG (Milkdown) + raw-markdown editing
  • Workspace-aware sidebar (pnpm / npm / yarn workspaces + Turborepo)
  • Local MiniSearch over titles, headings, body, tags, status, version
  • Light / dark themes, Mermaid diagrams, English / French UI
  • Claude Code slash commands: /set-documentation, /update-documentation
  • Static build for read-only deployment
