Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

doodle-ui

Hand-drawn React components with an Excalidraw-like sketch aesthetic. Chrome is drawn with rough.js. Text stays real HTML, so it remains crisp and accessible.

npm bundle size

Install

npm install doodleui-react
pnpm add doodleui-react
yarn add doodleui-react
bun add doodleui-react

Peer dependencies: react and react-dom >= 18.0.0.

MCP for AI agents

npx doodleui-react mcp

Exposes tools for component discovery, docs, install commands, theming, and conventions. See the MCP docs.

| Template | StackBlitz | CodeSandbox | | --- | --- | --- | | Next.js App Router | Open | Open | | Vite + React | Open | Open | | Full showcase | Open | Open |

Quickstart

import {
  SketchSeedProvider,
  TooltipProvider,
  Button,
  Card,
  useSketchSeed,
} from "doodleui-react";

function Shuffle() {
  const { shuffle } = useSketchSeed();
  return <Button onClick={shuffle}>Shuffle</Button>;
}

export function App() {
  return (
    <SketchSeedProvider>
      <TooltipProvider>
        <Shuffle />
        <Card title="Notebook">
          <Button variant="primary">Draw something</Button>
        </Card>
      </TooltipProvider>
    </SketchSeedProvider>
  );
}

Wrap the tree in SketchSeedProvider so a Shuffle action can redraw every unlocked sketch. Pass seed={123} on a component to lock its wobble. Uncontrolled seeds are SSR-safe: they use a fixed seed on the first render, then randomize after mount (see Install → SSR / Next.js).

Sketch strokes draw in on mount. Set animate={false} on a component, or wrap the tree in DoodleUIProvider animate={false}, to opt out. Pass theme="light" | "dark" | "system" on DoodleUIProvider (default system) so sketch ink and fills follow dark mode. prefers-reduced-motion: reduce disables motion unless you set forceAnimate. See the animation docs.

Accessibility

Default themes meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast for sketch strokes and text. Radix-backed controls keep accessible names and keyboard behavior; RoughSvg chrome is decorative (aria-hidden). Details and the audit matrix: A11Y-AUDIT.md in the monorepo.

Theming

import "doodleui-react/styles.css";

Override --doodle-ui-roughness, --doodle-ui-stroke-color, --doodle-ui-font-family, and related tokens on :root. Dark mode follows data-theme, .dark, prefers-color-scheme, or DoodleUIProvider theme. Details: doodle-ui.netlify.app/docs/theming.

Shared sketch props

Every component accepts:

| Prop | Type | Default | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | roughness | number | 1.5 | Sketchiness intensity | | seed | number | provider / fixed then random | Lock the pattern. Omit to follow Shuffle (SSR-safe) | | sketchColor | string | #1f1d1a | Stroke color | | className / style | standard | | Layout only. No bundled visual CSS framework |

Components

Button, Input, Textarea, Checkbox, Radio, Select, NativeSelect, Switch, Slider, Card, Badge, Alert, Modal, Divider, Progress, Tooltip, Tabs, Accordion, Table, Toast, Avatar, Pagination, Breadcrumb, Skeleton, Stepper, Label, Field, Collapsible, Popover, DropdownMenu, Dialog, AlertDialog, Command, Combobox, Kbd, Spinner, Toggle, ToggleGroup, InputGroup, InputOTP, ScrollArea, Resizable, HoverCard, ContextMenu, NavigationMenu, Menubar, Sheet, Drawer, AspectRatio, Empty, Heading, Text, Blockquote, InlineCode, Highlight, Sidebar, Carousel, plus the RoughSvg primitive.

Most of those sketch in on mount (draw-in) and re-ink on interaction. Default on; pass animate={false} to skip. Slider, Accordion, Avatar, Pagination, Breadcrumb, Skeleton, and Stepper stay static for now.

Modal, Tooltip, Checkbox, Radio, Select, Switch, Tabs, Accordion, Slider, Toast, Avatar, Popover, DropdownMenu, Dialog, AlertDialog, Collapsible, Label, HoverCard, ContextMenu, NavigationMenu, Menubar, Sheet, Drawer, and AspectRatio sit on Radix primitives; Command and Combobox add cmdk on top for search/filtering. InputOTP uses input-otp; Resizable uses react-resizable-panels; Carousel uses embla-carousel-react.
