Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

drizzle-partition

npx drizzle-partition drizzle/0000_init.sql --table orders --strategy RANGE --column created_at \
  --partition "orders_2024:FOR VALUES FROM ('2024-01-01') TO ('2025-01-01')" \
  --partition "orders_default:DEFAULT"

Turns a plain CREATE TABLE statement generated by drizzle-kit generate into a partitioned Postgres table, and appends the CREATE TABLE ... PARTITION OF ... statements for the child partitions. Answers drizzle-orm#2854, where people have been asking for partition support in the schema.

Why a SQL rewrite instead of a schema helper

Drizzle already turns your pgTable schema into correct CREATE TABLE SQL through drizzle-kit generate. The missing piece is only the PARTITION BY clause and the child tables, which is a small, mechanical addition to that generated SQL. Rewriting the SQL keeps this tool independent of Drizzle's internal column-builder API, so it works with any Drizzle version and does not need to reimplement its type mapping.

What it does

  1. You write your table with pgTable as usual and run drizzle-kit generate.
  2. You run drizzle-partition on the generated migration file, naming the table, the partition strategy (RANGE, LIST, or HASH), the partition key column, and one --partition "name:VALUES clause" per child table.
  3. It finds that table's CREATE TABLE statement (matching parentheses correctly, so a type like numeric(10, 2) is not mistaken for the end of the column list), adds PARTITION BY <STRATEGY> (<column>), and appends one CREATE TABLE "<name>" PARTITION OF "<table>" <clause>; per partition.

Library usage

import { partitionTable } from "drizzle-partition";

const sql = partitionTable(generatedSql, {
  table: "orders",
  strategy: "RANGE",
  column: "created_at",
  partitions: [{ name: "orders_2024", values: "FOR VALUES FROM ('2024-01-01') TO ('2025-01-01')" }, { name: "orders_default", values: "DEFAULT" }],
});

What it does not do

No sub-partitioning, no automatic conversion of an existing non-partitioned table, no attempt to compute partition boundaries for you. Postgres also requires the partition key to be part of any primary key or unique constraint on a partitioned table; this tool does not check or fix that for you, it only rewrites the DDL you already generated.

Install

npm install --save-dev drizzle-partition

Zero runtime dependencies. Requires Node 18 or later.
