Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

What it does

  • Dump a remote MySQL database to a .sql file, with live progress.
  • Clone a remote database straight into your local MySQL (streams mysqldump → mysql; no intermediate file).
  • Manage saved remote sources (encrypted passwords, host/port/user).
  • Works whether MySQL runs on the host or inside a Docker container (docker exec mode).

Install

npm i -g dumpster-cli

Requires Node ≥ 18, plus one of:

  • MySQL client tools (mysqldump + mysql) on PATH, or
  • docker on PATH (if MySQL runs in a container).

Usage

dumpster

Interactive full-screen TUI. Menu:

  • Dump to local database (clone) — pick source server + database, then local target.
  • Dump to a .sql file — pick source + database, output path with Tab autocomplete.
  • Manage remote sources — add / edit / remove saved MySQL servers.
  • Credits.

Navigation: ↑↓ move · enter select · esc back · ctrl+c quit.

Docker mode

When adding a server, the last field is "Docker container (optional)".

  • Leave empty → host MySQL. Uses mysqldump/mysql binaries on PATH.
  • Enter a container name/id (e.g. mysql-1) → all MySQL calls wrapped as docker exec -i <container> mysqldump|mysql …. No port mapping required.

Same option is available on the local-target form, so "dump to local" also works if your local MySQL runs in Docker.

Path autocomplete

In the .sql output path prompt:

  • Tab — completes the trailing basename. Single match completes fully (adds / if it's a directory); multiple matches complete to longest common prefix and list up to 10 candidates below.
  • Ctrl+U — clear whole path.
  • ~ expands to home directory.

Config

Stored under ~/.config/dumpster/config.json (Linux/macOS) or the platform-equivalent. Passwords are encrypted at rest with a key kept alongside the config directory (permissions 0600).

Development

git clone <this-repo>
cd dumpster-cli
npm install
npm run dev # ts-node, live source
npm run build # emit to dist/
