Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Dynamic Color Generator

Overview

This package provides utility functions for generating color palettes based on a base RGB color. It offers tools to convert between RGB and HSL color spaces, generate random colors, and create color variations while maintaining the original color's saturation and lightness.

Installation

npm install dynamic-color-generator

Functions

generateColors(n, rgb?)

Generates a series of colors based on a base RGB color.

  • n: Number of colors to generate
  • rgb (optional): Base RGB color as an array [r, g, b]. If not provided, a random color will be used.

Example:

const { generateColors } = require("dynamic-color-generator");

// Generate 5 colors from a random base color
const colors = generateColors(5);

// Generate 5 colors from a specific base color
const specificColors = generateColors(5, [255, 0, 0]); // Red base

generateVariables(n, rgb?)

Generates CSS custom properties (variables) with the generated colors.

  • n: Number of colors to generate
  • rgb (optional): Base RGB color as an array [r, g, b]

Example:

const { generateVariables } = require("dynamic-color-generator");

// Create 3 CSS variables with colors from a random base
generateVariables(3);

// Create 3 CSS variables with colors from a blue base
generateVariables(3, [0, 0, 255]);

The generated variables will be named --color-1, --color-2, etc., and can be used in CSS like:

.element {
  background-color: var(--color-1);
  color: var(--color-2);
}

Color Conversion Utilities

The package includes internal utility functions for color space conversion:

  • rgbToHsl(r, g, b): Converts RGB to HSL
  • hslToRgb(h, s, l): Converts HSL to RGB
  • generateRandomColor(): Generates a random RGB color

How It Works

The color generation algorithm works by:

  1. Converting the base RGB color to HSL
  2. Generating new colors by varying the hue while keeping saturation and lightness constant
  3. Converting back to RGB

This ensures that generated colors are harmonious and maintain a similar visual "feel" to the base color.
