Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Automatic checkpoints before Git can hurt you

EaseGit

Automatic checkpoints before Git can hurt you.

What is EaseGit?

EaseGit creates automatic safety checkpoints before dangerous Git operations and lets you undo them with one command.

  • Automatic protection during rebase, merge, push, checkout
  • Restore everything in one command
  • Zero configuration
  • Invisible until needed

Installation

npm install -g easegit-cli # installs command names: easegit (preferred) and easegit-cli
cd my-repo
easegit init # or: easegit-cli init

No global install? Use npx easegit init (or npx easegit-cli init). On Windows ensure your global npm bin (e.g., %AppData%\npm) is on PATH.

Usage

Setup (one time)

easegit init

This installs Git hooks that automatically create checkpoints before dangerous operations.

Normal work (unchanged)

git commit
git merge
git rebase
git push --force

EaseGit runs silently in the background. You won't notice it.

When something breaks

easegit undo

This restores your working directory, staged files, and untracked files to the last safe checkpoint.

Check status

easegit status

Shows when the last checkpoint was created and what operation triggered it.

How it works

EaseGit installs Git hooks that automatically create checkpoints before:

  • git commit
  • git rebase
  • git merge
  • git push
  • git checkout
  • git pull
  • git reset

Each checkpoint captures:

  • All working files
  • Staged changes
  • Untracked files

Checkpoints are stored as Git objects under hidden refs. Your commit history is never modified.

Recovery

If a Git operation damages your working state, run:

easegit undo

This restores everything exactly as it was before the operation.

Commands

  • easegit init - Set up EaseGit in this repository
  • easegit status - Show last checkpoint information
  • easegit undo - Restore last checkpoint

What EaseGit is NOT

  • Not a Git replacement
  • Not a backup tool
  • Not a tutorial
  • No configuration needed
  • No GUI

Philosophy

Git is powerful but dangerous. EaseGit makes it safe by creating automatic undo points before operations that can lose work.

You never have to remember to create a checkpoint. EaseGit does it automatically.
