Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.3.22

Published

A drop-in Eleventy theme for @eleventy-plugin-themer, started from theme-base

Readme

eleventy-theme-aurora

A drop-in Eleventy theme built on @eleventy-plugin-themer/core.

Aurora started as a clone of @eleventy-plugin-themer/theme-base and preserves its full contract — the same layout names (base.njk, home.njk, post.njk), the same partials, the same CSS class names, and the same theme.config.mjs keys. That means it is a drop-in replacement: switch themes by changing only the theme name in your Eleventy config.

Status: early. The visual identity is intentionally identical to theme-base for now and will diverge in a follow-up ("clone, then iterate").

Installation

npm install @eleventy-plugin-themer/core eleventy-theme-aurora @11ty/eleventy-plugin-syntaxhighlight

With Vite build optimizations:

npm install -D @eleventy-plugin-themer/build-vite @11ty/eleventy-plugin-vite

Usage

Point your themer config at this package instead of theme-base:

// eleventy.config.mjs
import { eleventyPluginThemer } from '@eleventy-plugin-themer/core';

export default async function (eleventyConfig) {
  const { dir } = await eleventyPluginThemer(eleventyConfig, {
    theme: 'eleventy-theme-aurora',
    projectRoot: import.meta.dirname,
    input: 'content',
    output: '_site',
  });
  return { dir };
}

Everything else (overrides, content/_data/theme.js, features) works exactly as it does with theme-base — see the theme-base README for the full configuration, override, shortcode, and feature reference.

Features

Two self-contained, per-page opt-in features ship with the theme:

  • code-highlighting — PrismJS syntax highlighting with copy button, optional line numbers, and diff highlighting.
  • back-to-top — a floating button that smooth-scrolls to the top.

Enable per page via front matter, e.g. feature: code-highlighting.

Documentation

  • Shortcodes — layout shortcodes (contentGrid, box, hero, heroButton) and post shortcodes (pinnedPost, latestPosts, relatedPosts), with every argument and its default.
  • Filters — all Nunjucks filters (escaping, dates, tags, content, social, utilities) with signatures.

Local development

This repo lives alongside the eleventy-plugin-themer monorepo. To develop against unpublished core/build-vite changes, override the dependency with a local path instead of the published version:

// package.json (local only — do not commit)
"dependencies": {
  "@eleventy-plugin-themer/core": "file:../eleventy-plugin-themer/packages/core"
}
npm install
npm test # unit tests for filters + shortcodes
npm run lint
