Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Ember-simple-form

npm version Ember Observer Score

Ember Simple Form is a basic component for decoupling your form data from it's original source.

TLDR; Ember Simple Form takes care of a lot of edge cases around capturing form values.

It uses Ember's copy method (or .toJSON on Ember Data models) to create an immutable copy of a set of startingValues. For capturing user submit actions, the form copies the current values within the form and then sends an onsubmit action which can be listened for.

Installation

  • npm install ember-simple-form

Use

To create a form without starting values:

{{#simple-form as |formValues|}}
  {{input value=formValues.username placeholder="Username"}}
  {{input type="password" value=formValues.username placeholder="Password"}}

  <button>Submit</button>
{{/simple-form}}

To listen to the submit event and get all values from the form and call the login action:

{{#simple-form onsubmit=(action "login") as |formValues|}}
  {{input value=formValues.username placeholder="Username"}}
  {{input type="password" value=formValues.username placeholder="Password"}}

  <button>Submit</button>
{{/simple-form}}

Let's set the form to start with a default username of "admin". Initial values can be set using the startingValues attribute:

{{#simple-form startingValues=(hash username="admin") onsubmit=(action "login") as |formValues|}}
  {{input value=formValues.username placeholder="Username"}}
  {{input type="password" value=formValues.username placeholder="Password"}}

  <button>Submit</button>
{{/simple-form}}

Reseting the Form Values

There may be times where the form needs to be reset. For this, as a second variable, simple-form yields a function to reset the form.

This could be used to add a reset button to the form above:

{{#simple-form startingValues=(hash username="admin") onsubmit=(action "login") as |formValues resetForm|}}
  {{input value=formValues.username placeholder="Username"}}
  {{input type="password" value=formValues.username placeholder="Password"}}

  <button {{action resetForm}}>Reset</button>
  <button>Submit</button>
{{/simple-form}}

The onsubmit action will also send the resetForm function so that the form can be reset after handling submission. For instance, the controller for the above could be:

import Ember from 'ember';

export default Ember.Controller.extend({
  actions: {
    login(formValues, resetForm) {
      fetch('/login', {
        method: 'POST',
        data: JSON.stringify(formValues)
      }).then((res) => res.json())
        .then(() => {
          resetForm();
        });
    },
  },
});
