Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

env-guarder 🛡️

npm version License: MIT

A robust, lightweight, and type-safe environment variable validator for Node.js. Ensure your application has all the required configuration before it even starts.

🚀 Features

  • Type Validation: Support for string, number, and boolean.
  • Auto-Casting: Automatically converts "3000" to 3000 (Number) or "true" to true (Boolean).
  • Default Values: Provide sensible defaults for optional variables.
  • Custom Validation: Add your own logic with validation functions.
  • TypeScript Support: Full type definitions included.
  • Powerful CLI: Quickly check environment variables from your terminal.
  • Minimal Dependencies: Only uses chalk and dotenv.

📦 Installation

npm install env-guarder

⚡ Usage (CLI)

Check if required environment variables are set in your .env file directly from the terminal.

# Basic usage
npx env-guarder PORT DB_URL

# Specify a custom .env file
npx env-guarder PORT DB_URL --env-file .env.production

# Show help
npx env-guarder --help

✅ Output Example

✅ All required env variables are set!

🧠 Usage (Code)

Basic Validation

import { validateEnv } from "env-guarder";

const env = validateEnv({
  PORT: { required: true, type: "number", default: 3000 },
  DB_URL: { required: true },
  DEBUG: { type: "boolean", default: false }
});

console.log(env.PORT); // 3000 (Number)
console.log(env.DEBUG); // false (Boolean)

Custom Validation

const env = validateEnv({
  API_KEY: {
    required: true,
    validate: (val) => val.length >= 32 || "API_KEY must be at least 32 characters long"
  }
});

Options

| Option | Type | Default | Description | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | exitOnError | boolean | true | If true, calls process.exit(1) on validation failure. If false, throws an Error. |

📘 TypeScript

env-guarder comes with built-in type definitions.

import { validateEnv } from "env-guarder";

interface Config {
  PORT: number;
  DB_URL: string;
}

const config = validateEnv<Config>({
  PORT: { required: true, type: "number" },
  DB_URL: { required: true }
});

// config.PORT is correctly typed as number

📄 .env Example

PORT=3000
DB_URL=postgres://localhost:5432/mydb

🛠 Roadmap

  • [ ] Auto .env.example generator
  • [ ] Config file support (env-guarder.config.js)
  • [ ] Glob patterns for variable names
  • [ ] Support for array types
