Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

npm version License: MIT

ESLint plugin for codebases using React Compiler. Flags manual memoization (useMemo, useCallback, React.memo), reminding you to let the compiler do its thing ✨

Why?

As the React Compiler docs state:

React Compiler adds automatic memoization more precisely and granularly than is possible with useMemo, useCallback, and React.memo. If you choose to keep manual memoization, React Compiler will analyze them and determine if your manual memoization matches its automatically inferred memoization. If there isn’t a match, the compiler will choose to bail out of optimizing that component.

When using React Compiler, manual memoization is no longer necessary in most cases. When the compiler sees manual memoization that does not match the memoization it generated, it will bail out to prevent breaking your components. This leaves potential performance on the table and makes your components harder to read!

This plugin helps you identify, and catch yourself writing, and remove these manual memoization patterns, since they are now largely redundant. In cases where manual memoization can improve on what the compiler is able to output, you're always free to disable the relevant rules!

npm install --save-dev eslint-plugin-react-no-manual-memo
# or
yarn add --dev eslint-plugin-react-no-manual-memo

Usage

Flat Config (ESLint 9+)

Use the recommended config inside defineConfig():

import { defineConfig } from "eslint/config";
import reactNoManualMemo from 'eslint-plugin-react-no-manual-memo';

export default defineConfig([
	reactNoManualMemo.configs['flat/recommended'],
]);

[!NOTE] ESLint will throw an error if you try to use the flat config without wrapping your config in defineConfig().

See the docs section about using third-party configs for more information.

import { defineConfig } from "eslint/config";
import reactNoManualMemo from 'eslint-plugin-react-no-manual-memo';

export default defineConfig([
	{
		plugins: {
			'react-no-manual-memo': reactNoManualMemo,
		},
		rules: {
			'react-no-manual-memo/no-hook-memo': 'error',
			// ...and any other rules you want to enable
		},
	},
]);

Legacy Config (.eslintrc)

Use the recommended config:

{
	"extends": ["plugin:react-no-manual-memo/recommended"]
}
{
	"plugins": ["react-no-manual-memo"],
	"rules": {
		"react-no-manual-memo/no-hook-memo": "error",
		// ...and any other rules you want to enable
	}
}
