Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Expo Router Template with Nativewind

Go-to Expo Router template to build Universal Apps for Native & Web. ✨

Comes with NativeWind styling and React Native Skia (for high-performance graphic rendering & animations).

Includes

  • Expo v50: Best DUX for React Native
  • Expo Router v3: Best framework to build universal apps (routing with deep linking, API server...). Based on their tabs@50 template
  • NativeWind v4: Best way to style for all platforms (Native & Web) from a single codebase (Tailwind on stamina 💊)
  • React Native Skia: Most performant way to create universal graphics & animations for Web and Native
  • Reanimated v3: Smooth animations ran on the UI thread

☝️ Note: This template is also available without NativeWind if you're only interested in RN Skia.

Get Started

Simply create a new expo app using this template:

npx create-expo-app@latest --template expo-router-nativewind-skia-template MyUniversallyStyledAndAnimatedApp

Run yarn start to start the server. Works out-of-the-box for web. For iOS, run npx expo run:ios and for Android run npx expo run:android.

Optional: Update Skia Loading Method on the Web

Skia works on Web out-of-the-box in any part of this template app.

By default in this template, Skia is loaded using defered component registration via index.web.js.

If you ever wish to use code splitting instead:

  • Remove the index.js and index.web.js files and change your package.json entry point by updating this line:
{
  (...)
  "main": "expo-router/entry",
  (...)
}
  • Create a loading file, like SkiaUI.web.tsx:
import Constants from 'expo-constants';
import { Text, View, StyleSheet } from 'react-native';
import { WithSkiaWeb } from '@shopify/react-native-skia/lib/module/web';

const SkiaUI = () => <View style={styles.container}>
    <WithSkiaWeb
      opts={{ locateFile: () => '/static/js/canvaskit.wasm' }}
      getComponent={() => require('./HelloSkia')}
      fallback={<Text style={{ color: 'white', textAlign: 'center' }}>Loading Skia...</Text>}
    />
  </View>;

const styles = StyleSheet.create({
  container: {
    flex: 1,
    justifyContent: 'center',
    paddingTop: Constants.statusBarHeight,
  },
});

export default SkiaUI;

Note: for the native SkiaUI.tsx, you can simply load the <HelloSkia /> component directly.
