Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

express-advanced-middlewares

A collection of advanced middlewares for Express.js applications including logging, request validation, rate limiting, CORS, compression, security headers, and error handling.

Table of Contents

Installation

npm install express-advanced-middlewares

Usage

Advanced Logging Middleware

The logger middleware provides advanced logging capabilities for your Express application. It logs all incoming requests and their responses, which can be useful for debugging and monitoring.

const express = require('express');
const { logger } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

// Use the logger middleware
app.use(logger);

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello, world!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

Request Validation Middleware

The validator middleware uses Joi to validate incoming request bodies. This ensures that your endpoints receive the expected data and helps prevent errors.

const express = require('express');
const { validator } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');
const Joi = require('joi');

const app = express();
app.use(express.json());

// Define the schema for request validation
const schema = Joi.object({
  name: Joi.string().required(),
  age: Joi.number().required()
});

// Use the validator middleware
app.post('/user', validator(schema), (req, res) => {
  res.send('User is valid!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

For more information on Joi, check out the official documentation.

Rate Limiter Middleware

The rateLimiter middleware helps prevent abuse by limiting the number of requests a client can make in a given period.

const express = require('express');
const { rateLimiter } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

// Use the rate limiter middleware
app.use(rateLimiter);

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello, world!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

CORS Middleware

The cors middleware enables Cross-Origin Resource Sharing, allowing your application to accept requests from different domains.

const express = require('express');
const { cors } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

// Use the CORS middleware
app.use(cors);

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello, world!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

Compression Middleware

The compression middleware compresses response bodies, improving the performance of your application by reducing the size of the response.

const express = require('express');
const { compression } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

// Use the compression middleware
app.use(compression);

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello, world!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

Helmet Middleware

The helmet middleware adds various security headers to your application, helping to secure it against common web vulnerabilities.

const express = require('express');
const { helmet } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

// Use the helmet middleware
app.use(helmet);

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello, world!');
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});

For more information on helmet, check out the official documentation.

Error Handling Middleware

The errorHandler middleware provides a centralized way to handle errors in your application. It catches all errors and sends a consistent response to the client.

const express = require('express');
const { errorHandler } = require('express-advanced-middlewares');

const app = express();

app.get('/', (req, res) => {
    throw new Error('Something went wrong!');
});

// Use the error handling middleware
app.use(errorHandler);

app.listen(3000, () => {
    console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});
