Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

express-self-validator

v1.0.1

Published

express self validator

Readme

express-self-validator

This is a self express validator middleware.

This middleware accepts validation function and returns a middleware that validates the request.

written in typescript.

Installation

npm install express-self-validator

Usage

const express = require('express');
const expressSelfValidator = require('express-self-validator');

const app = express();
app.get('/', expressSelfValidator({
    // validation on the request query params
    query: {
        // key is the name of the query parameter
        key: "offest",
        // custom validation function
        // not that each validation function should return a boolean
        // and the validation function should be sync
        validators: [
            [isNumber, "offset must be a number"],
            // we can be sure value to be number here because of the previous validation
            [(value) => value > 0, "offset must be greater than 0"]
            [(value) => offset < 0 , "offset must be greater than 0"],
            [(value) => offset > 100 , "offset must be less than 100"]
        ],
        // optional, default is false
        required: true,
    }
}) , (req, res) => {
  res.send('Hello World!');
});

you can validate request body, query, params

for example to validate request body you can do this:

{
    body: {
        key: "name",
        validators: [
            [isString, "name must be a string"],
            [(value) => value.length > 3 && value.length < 10>, "name must be between 3 and 10"],
        ],
        required: true,
    }
}

handling validation errors

when using this middleware, you can handle validation errors by catching those errors in your error handling middleware.

the middleware will throw an error with the following structure:

{
    status: 400 // 0r 500 ( if there were an error running validator functions) , depends on the error
    message: "validation error",
    errors: [
        {
            key: "name",
            message: "name must be a string"
        },
        {
            key: "name",
            message: "name must be between 3 and 10"
        }
    ]
    isOperational: true
}
app.use((err, req, res, next) => {
    if (err instanceof expressSelfValidator.ValidationError) {
        res.status(err.status).json({
            message: err.message,
            errors: err.errors
        })
    } else {
        next(err);
    }
});
