Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Turn form data into a JavaScript object, based on input names

extract-object-from-form-data

Utility for turning values from FormData into a JavaScript object.

Why?

The initial motivation for this utility is to handle form submissions in Remix/React Router v7. Instead of form submissions coming in the form of application/json, Remix form submissions are sent as FormData. There are lots of reasons why this method of form submission is great, but pulling the data out of the FormData object is not one of them, especially with large forms:

const firstName = formData.get('firstName');
const lastName = formData.get('lastName');
const email = formData.get('email');

// etc. etc. etc.

const lastValue = formData.get('lastValue');

Installation

$ npm install extract-object-from-form-data

Importing

import { extractObjectFromFormData } from 'extract-object-from-form-data';

Usage

Extracting values from a simple form (like the example above):

<input type="text" name="firstName" />
<input type="text" name="lastName" />
<input type="text" name="email" />
<!--  some other inputs here-->
<input type="text" name="lastValue" />
// When handling the form submission
const formData = await request.formData();
const { firstName, lastName, email, lastValue, ...rest } = extractObjectFromFormData(formData);

Nested data

You can create nested data by giving your form inputs the right names:

<input type="text" name="id" />
<input type="text" name="name.first" />
<input type="text" name="name.last" />
<input type="text" name="contact.email" />
<!--  some other inputs here-->
<input type="text" name="lastValue" />
// When handling the form submission
const formData = await request.formData();
const userData = extractObjectFromFormData(formData);

/**
  Example output
{
  id: 'user-123',
  name: {
    first: 'John',
    last: 'Lennon'
  },
  contact: {
    email: '[email protected]'
  },
  lastValue: 'the end'
}
*/

Lists

You can create lists of values:

<input type="text" name="id" />
<input type="text" name="names[0]" />
<input type="text" name="name[1]" />
<input type="text" name="contact[0].email" />
<input type="text" name="contact[0].phone" />
<!--  some other inputs here-->
<input type="text" name="lastValue" />
// When handling the form submission
const formData = await request.formData();
const userData = extractObjectFromFormData(formData);

/**
  Example output
{
  id: 'user-123',
  name: [ 'John', 'Lennon' ],
  contact: [{
    email: '[email protected]',
    phone: '555-555-1234'
  }],
  lastValue: 'the end'
}
*/

Booleans (checkboxes)

Checkboxes are difficult, because if they checkbox is not checked, then the name/value pair is not present in the FormData. To make your checkboxes always show up in the output of extractObjectFromFormData, you can add a type="hidden" Input along with the checkbox. It needs to have the same name, plus .isCheckbox, then set the value of the checkbox input to isChecked Please see the example below:

<input type="checkbox" name="likesTheBeatles" value="isChecked" />
<input type="hidden" name="likesTheBeatles.isCheckbox" />
// When handling the form submission
const formData = await request.formData();
const userData = extractObjectFromFormData(formData);

/**
  Example output if the checkbox is checked
{
  likesTheBeatles: true,
}
*/

/**

  Example output if the checkbox is not checked
{
  likesTheBeatles: false,
}
*/
