Flash Hanzi Semantic

A color hanzi webfont for language learners: each character's semantic component is colored by meaning theme — water blue, fire red, plant green, person amber, and six more — while every other stroke renders in the current text color, so the font follows your page's colors and dark mode automatically.

Covers ~9,600 simplified and traditional characters (COLRv0, supported by all modern browsers), shipped as unicode-range woff2 slices so browsers only download the slices covering characters actually on the page.

Characters outside the font's coverage fall through to the next family in the stack per glyph.

How characters are colored

Coloring follows each character's etymology, from Make Me a Hanzi:

• Pictophonetic characters (河 = 氵 meaning + 可 sound) color only the semantic component — the sound half stays ink.
• Ideographic characters (好 = woman + child) color every theme member, since all components carry meaning.
• Characters without etymology data color their dictionary radical.
• Pictographic characters (水, 火) color whole when they are themselves a theme member.

The glyph outlines derive from Arphic Technology's KaitiM fonts via Make Me a Hanzi and are distributed under the Arphic Public License (ARPHICPL.txt, included in this package).
