Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

flutter-feature

A CLI tool to generate the repetitive boilerplate of a Flutter feature.

Build the structure once. Generate it whenever you need it.

Installation

npm install -g flutter-feature

Or with pnpm:

pnpm add -g flutter-feature

After installation, use either flutter-feature or the shorter ff.

Usage

Run the command from the root of a Flutter project:

ff generate profile

or:

ff g profile

This creates the feature under:

lib/features/profile/

What gets generated?

The current generator creates:

lib/
└── features/
    └── profile/
        ├── data/
        │   ├── datasources/
        │   │   └── profile_remote_datasource.dart
        │   ├── models/
        │   │   └── profile_model.dart
        │   └── repositories/
        │       └── profile_repository.dart
        ├── domain/
        │   ├── entities/
        │   │   └── profile.dart
        │   └── repositories/
        │       └── profile_repository.dart
        └── presentation/
            └── bloc/
                ├── profile_bloc.dart
                ├── profile_event.dart
                └── profile_state.dart

The directory structure and generated files are intentionally separate. Some directories can exist even when they do not currently have a generated template.

Project-aware templates

Templates can use information from the Flutter project's pubspec.yaml.

For example:

name: blog_app
description: "A new Flutter project with supabase."

provides:

appName = blog_app

A model template can then generate:

import 'package:blog_app/features/profile/domain/entities/profile.dart';

class ProfileModel extends Profile {
  const ProfileModel();
}

Template system

Templates live under:

src/templates/feature/

They use variables such as:

{{appName}}
{{snakeName}}
{{PascalName}}

For example:

import 'package:{{appName}}/features/{{snakeName}}/domain/entities/{{snakeName}}.dart';

class {{PascalName}}Model extends {{PascalName}} {
  const {{PascalName}}Model();
}

Template mapping

template-path.ts defines what the feature generator creates by mapping:

layer
folder
template
output

For example:

t({
  layer: "domain",
  folder: "entities",
  template: "entity.dart.template",
  output: "{{snakeName}}.dart",
})

maps:

domain/entities/entity.dart.template
                ↓
domain/entities/profile.dart

To add another permanent piece of boilerplate:

  1. Create the .dart.template file.
  2. Add its mapping to template-path.ts.
  3. Build the package.

The generation engine handles the rest.

Development

Install dependencies:

pnpm install

Build:

pnpm build

Run during development:

pnpm dev -- g profile

Build flow:

TypeScript source
      ↓
     tsc
      ↓
  tsc-alias
      ↓
   dist/*.js
      ↓
copy templates
      ↓
dist/templates/

tsc-alias resolves the @/ imports after TypeScript compilation, while the template-copy step places the runtime templates into dist/templates/.

Requirements

  • Node.js
  • A Flutter project
  • pubspec.yaml at the Flutter project root
