Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Higgsfield After Effects MCP

Local MCP server for inspecting and editing Adobe After Effects projects. It includes native composition, layer, property, keyframe, effect and camera operations, plus offline creative skills. The server runs on the same computer as After Effects; no cloud account or After Effects panel is required.

Requirements

  • Node.js 24 or later on macOS or Windows.
  • Adobe After Effects installed and licensed on the MCP host.
  • On macOS, permission for the MCP client to control After Effects through Automation.
  • In After Effects, enable Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network if scripting reports file access denied.

Installation

npm install --global fnf-after-effects-mcp
fnf-after-effects doctor
fnf-after-effects install-codex

install-codex registers the installed server as higgsfield-use-after-effects. Refresh the MCP connection after registration. For another desktop MCP client, run fnf-after-effects config and add the printed entry to that client's configuration. The stdio server executable is fnf-after-effects-mcp. Set AE_MCP_EXE in the server environment for a nonstandard After Effects installation.

doctor checks the installation and bundled skills, but does not connect to After Effects. Open a project and call ae_project_info through the MCP client to verify the live connection.

Tools

  • ae_project_info inspects the active project.
  • ae_catalog lists available native operations and their argument schemas; ae_do executes an operation.
  • ae_get_skill reads bundled workflows and references; ae_get_skill_asset resolves bundled files on the local MCP host.
  • Other tools inspect compositions and support the native operation workflow. Use ae_catalog for the exact operations available in the installed version.

Troubleshooting and limits

Inspect the project before editing and render representative frames to verify visual results. A timed-out operation may still have run; inspect After Effects before retrying. batch.run groups operations for undo but does not automatically roll back completed steps after an error.

Set AE_MCP_READONLY=1 to restrict project changes or AE_MCP_ALLOW_CATEGORIES to limit operation categories. Arbitrary eval is disabled unless AE_MCP_ENABLE_EVAL=1. Keep the local file mailbox in a private writable directory.

This package is based on the MIT-licensed mcp-aftereffects runtime. The installed package includes LICENSE and UPSTREAM.md with attribution and licensing details for the adaptations and skills.
