Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

freelance-rate-js

test

Calculate the hourly rate you need to charge as a freelancer. Zero dependencies — a direct Node.js port of freelance-rate-cli (Python), for people who reach for npx instead of pip.

Numeric output is cross-checked against the Python version (see test.js) — both implement the same formula and return identical results.

Run without installing

npx github:kleogeos/freelance-rate-js --net 60000

No npm account, no registry publish, no global install — npx clones the repo and runs it directly.

Usage

npx github:kleogeos/freelance-rate-js --net 60000 --expenses 2000
You should charge at least $67.11 / hour

Revenue needed per year 90,200
Billable hours per year 1,344
Day rate (8h) 536.9
10-hour project 671.13
40-hour project 2,684.52

Options

| Flag | Default | Meaning | |---|---|---| | --net <n> | required | Target take-home income per year | | --tax <pct> | 25 | Tax rate, percent | | --expenses <n> | 0 | Business expenses per year | | --buffer <pct> | 10 | Safety buffer, percent | | --weeks-off <n> | 4 | Unpaid weeks off per year | | --hours-per-week <n> | 40 | Working hours per week | | --billable <pct> | 70 | Percent of hours that are billable | | --json | off | Output as JSON |

Install locally (optional)

git clone https://github.com/kleogeos/freelance-rate-js.git
cd freelance-rate-js
npm link # makes `freelance-rate` available globally

Tests

npm test

Where this fits

Part of a small set of zero-dependency freelancer tools, including a growing set of npx-runnable ports: freelance-invoice-js (invoice generator) and contract-checklist-js (contract clause scanner), same npx github:... pattern. Also: freelance-rate-cli (Python, same calculator), freelance-invoice-cli, and the rest at kleogeos.github.io/freelancer-tools.
