Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Injecting Google snippet into HTML for Analytics

Readme

ga4-webpack-plugin

The ga4-webpack-plugin simplifies injecting the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) snippet into your HTML using Webpack.

Install

Install the plugin via npm: npm i --save-dev ga4-webpack-plugin

Setup

Add the plugin to your webpack configuration:

// webpack.config.js

const GA4WebpackPlugin = require('ga4-webpack-plugin');

module.exports = {
  // ... other webpack configuration options

  plugins: [
    new GA4WebpackPlugin({
      // Your GA4 Measurement ID (required)
      id: "GA_MEASUREMENT_ID",

      // Whether to inject the GA4 snippet into HTML (default: true)
      inject: true,

      // Automatically trigger a page view on load (default: true)
      callPageView: true
    })
  ]
}

Note: Ensure you replace "GA_MEASUREMENT_ID" with your actual GA4 Measurement ID.

In your index.html, include <ga4.analytics /> where you want the GA4 snippet injected. This step is crucial for the plugin to function correctly.

Injected HTML

The plugin injects the following code into your HTML:

<!-- Google Analytics 4 (gtag.js) -->
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=GA_MEASUREMENT_ID"></script>
<script>
  window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
  function gtag() {
    dataLayer.push(arguments);
  }
  gtag('js', new Date());

  gtag('config', 'GA_MEASUREMENT_ID');
</script>

Optionally, you can enable callPageView: true in the plugin options to automatically trigger the page view. This adds:

gtag('js', new Date());
gtag('config', 'GA_MEASUREMENT_ID');

to your injected code.
