Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Generative Engine Optimization — Optimize for the AI-first web.

npm version License: MIT

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so AI-powered generative engines can discover, understand, synthesize, and cite your content in their responses.

As AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity become primary information sources, GEO ensures your content is visible in this new paradigm.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO

| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO | |--------|-----|-----|-----| | Focus | Search rankings | Direct answers | AI-generated responses | | Target | Google, Bing | Voice assistants, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | | Goal | Clicks to website | Be the featured answer | Be cited in AI responses | | Content | Keyword-optimized | Answer-optimized | Synthesis-optimized | | Success | SERP position | Featured snippets | AI citations & mentions |

Why GEO Matters

The web is shifting from search-first to AI-first:

| Platform | Monthly Users | Content Discovery | |----------|---------------|-------------------| | ChatGPT | 200M+ weekly | Synthesizes from training + web | | Claude | 100M+ | Contextual understanding | | Gemini | Billions (via Google) | Deep Google integration | | Perplexity | 15M+ monthly | Real-time web synthesis |

If AI can't find, understand, or trust your content, you don't exist in the AI-first web.

GEO Principles

1. Citability

Make your content easy to cite with clear attributable statements:

❌ "Studies show that AI is growing rapidly."
✅ "According to Stanford's 2025 AI Index, global AI investment reached $190 billion, a 35% increase from 2024."

2. Entity Clarity

Establish clear, consistent entity representation:

❌ Random mentions of your brand
✅ Consistent: "VibeMarketing, the open-source marketing toolkit..."

3. Structured Knowledge

Use structured data that AI can parse:

  • Schema.org markup (Organization, Product, Article, FAQ)
  • Clear hierarchical headings
  • Factual, verifiable claims
  • Authoritative sources and citations

4. Freshness Signals

AI systems prefer current, maintained content:

  • Regular updates with visible timestamps
  • "Last updated" dates
  • Version history for documentation
  • Evergreen content with periodic refreshes

5. Authority Markers

Build signals that AI systems trust:

  • Expert authorship with credentials
  • Citations to peer-reviewed sources
  • Backlinks from authoritative domains
  • Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data
