Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Client Side Address Book

This is a Single Page Application - Address Book with basic functionality to store, view, search, order, edit or delete contacts.

Package Install And Start

  • If cloned from Git, go to ./GIGTask/GIGTaskRaw and execute:
    • npm install
    • npm start
  • If installed as npm package, go to ./node_module/ and execute:
    • npm start

Functionality

  1. First view where all contacts are listed:
    • Order (Asc/Desc) contacts by clicking on column name.
    • Edit/Delete contact.
    • Search contacts.
  2. Second view which is a form:
    • Add new contact.
    • Edit existing contact.
    • Delete existing contact.
  3. Contacts data is persisted on the client and can be loaded manually through persistent storage value or app config.js file (see in-code comments for reference).
  4. When creating new contacts there is fitting validation to all fields.
  5. App loads countries list from npm package country-list which can be turned on/off (see in-code comments for reference).

Form Fields

  • First name (input[type=text], required, validated that it contains only letters, whitespaces, dots)
  • Last name (input[type=text], required, validated that it contains only letters, whitespaces, dots)
  • Email (input[type=text], required, validated that it contains valid email format)
  • Country (select, required) - populated by npm country-list module on initial load of page.

Project Info:

Even though this is a small project, the structure I used mimics a large project with separate logic for each view. Some of the variables are extracted into config.js file for easier customization. More or all can be extracted in order to keep the business logical code free of any hard-coded values so that it can be as a reusable module. I've kept things as simple as possible for faster code execution. Styling is basic which I can extend to a much nicer version with great effects and animations but given the current task I emphasised on code logic than design.

Note: I've left some comments in the code-base itself where specific logic is used.
