Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

GitHub-Checks CLI

github-checks is a small CLI tool to create and update check runs for commits on GitHub. It is designed to be used in CI/CD pipelines.

This tool uses the GitHub Check Runs REST API.

Installation

npm install -g github-checks

Alternatively, you can use npx to run the CLI without installing it:

npx github-checks ...

Usage

There are 2 commands available:

  • create - Create a new check run
  • update - Update an existing check run

Commands

  1. Create a new check run

    npx github-checks create --accessToken=<string> --owner=<string> --repo=<string> --head_sha=<string> --name=<string> --status=queued|in_progress --details_url=<string>
    npx github-checks create --accessToken=<string> --owner=<string> --repo=<string> --head_sha=<string> --name=<string> --status=completed --conclusion=<string> --details_url=<string>

This command returns the checkRunId that you can use to update the check run:

Refer to the Error Handling section for details on failure behavior.

  2. Update an existing check run

    npx github-checks update --accessToken=<string> --owner=<string> --repo=<string> --head_sha=<string> --checkRunId=<string> --name=<string> --status=queued|in_progress --details_url=<string> --output.title=<string> --output.summary=<string>
    npx github-checks update --accessToken=<string> --owner=<string> --repo=<string> --head_sha=<string> --checkRunId=<string> --name=<string> --status=completed --conclusion=<string> --details_url=<string> --output.title=<string> --output.summary=<string>

If successful, the command will return the updated check run and return success in the terminal:

Refer to the Error Handling section for details on failure behavior.

Environment Variables

Alternatively, you can just set the environment variables for the following parameters:

  • GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN=<string>
  • OWNER=<string>
  • REPO=<string>
  • HEAD_SHA=<string>

These environment variables will be used as default values for the CLI arguments. You can still override them by passing the arguments.

Error Handling

On failure, the CLI throws an error and exits with the status code 1.

Resilience

If the request fails, the CLI will retry the request up to 3 times before failing.

Documentation

A detailed documentation will be available soon.
