gmana CLI

gmana is a Node.js CLI for generating secure passwords and memorable passphrases, with optional clipboard copy, local history, and interactive prompts.

Installation

npm install -g gmana

Requires Node.js 18 or newer.

Commands

Generate a password

gmana gen
gmana gen --length 20
gmana gen --no-symbols
gmana gen --length 16 --extra-symbols --exclude-similar

Generate a passphrase

gmana gen --words 4
gmana gen --words 6 --separator "_"

Interactive mode

gmana gen --interactive

Batch mode

gmana gen --batch 5

Generation Options

-l, --length <number>      Password length
-i, --interactive          Run the interactive prompt
    --no-uppercase         Exclude uppercase letters
    --no-lowercase         Exclude lowercase letters
    --no-numbers           Exclude numbers
    --no-symbols           Exclude symbols
    --extra-symbols        Include extra symbols
    --exclude-similar      Exclude similar characters (il1Lo0O)
    --exclude-ambiguous    Exclude ambiguous characters
-w, --words <number>       Generate a passphrase with N words
    --separator <char>     Passphrase separator
    --batch <number>       Generate multiple results
    --out <file>           Write batch output to a file
-c, --copy                 Copy the generated result to the clipboard
-s, --save                 Save generated passwords to history
    --show-strength        Show strength analysis

Configuration

Configuration is stored in ~/.gmana/config.json.

History

History is stored in ~/.gmana/history.json.

The interactive history view lets you browse recent entries, copy a saved password, or clear history. Passwords are masked in list output.

Notes

• Password generation uses crypto.randomInt for cryptographically secure randomness.
• Clipboard copy is enabled by the gen command unless disabled with --no-copy.
• History is only written when --save is used.

Release

To prepare a release locally:

pnpm --filter gmana release:prepare -- --bump patch --notes "Short release summary"

To publish after validation:

pnpm --filter gmana release:publish

GitHub Actions can also publish through .github/workflows/release.yml using the NPM_TOKEN repository secret.
