Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

gobo-connector

Sends DMX from the gobo browser app to lighting hardware over Art-Net, sACN (E1.31) or OSC.

A browser cannot open a UDP socket, so it cannot send Art-Net itself; the connector does that part. Run it, then open the app.

Usage

npx gobo-connector@latest

Then open https://gobolive.cc/ and press ctrl+enter. Chrome asks before a website may reach a program on your computer; allow it for gobo. Nothing is installed and nothing starts at login.

To have it start at login, download it from Releases, or on an Apple Silicon Mac or x86_64 Linux:

brew tap nicholaspjm/gobo https://github.com/nicholaspjm/gobo-dmx-live-code
brew install gobo-connector
brew services start gobo-connector

In a checkout of the repository, npm start runs the connector and serves the app from one process.

The output is chosen in your scene:

artnet('2.255.255.255') // broadcast to every node on that subnet
artnet('2.0.0.100') // or one node's IP
sacn(1, 100) // sACN, base universe and priority
osc('127.0.0.1', 9000) // OSC, for TouchDesigner and other OSC apps

The host is the destination, never your own machine. Sending to your own machine, and being on a different subnet from the rig, are the usual reasons nothing arrives.

Options

--ui <dir> also serve a built copy of the app from the same port
--config <p> read startup config from a specific file
--no-open do not open a browser
--no-install do not add the login item that starts it with the computer
--lan listen on every network interface, not just this computer
--allow-origin <url> also accept pages from that site (repeatable)
--no-update do not replace itself when a new release comes out
--version print the version and stop
--help print these options and stop
--uninstall remove the login item the first run added

The downloaded connector keeps itself up to date. When a release comes out it downloads the file for your system, checks its size and checksum against what GitHub published, runs it once to see it starts, and swaps it in the next time nothing has been connected for a minute and a half, so never during a show. --no-update turns that off; copies from Homebrew or npm are updated by those instead.

It listens on localhost:3001 and answers only gobo's own pages: the hosted app, and pages served from this computer. --lan (or GOBO_LAN=1) lets other devices on the network open a copy served from here; web pages are still checked, but any program on that network can connect, so use it only on a network you trust.

Defaults to mock with no config file, which sends nothing, and waits for the app to choose an output.

Without Node

The downloads above are single executables with Node inside, with nothing else to install.

A USB DMX interface needs no connector: the browser drives it over WebSerial. Click usb in the app.
